  • I dread coming here the day after a loss. This is when the elongated part of FAN, Fanatic, come out in people.

    Bellomy is a Freshman. Give the kid a break. The real issue here is that we HAD to put a Freshman in at QB. You can thank RR for that, not the current coaching staff. For anyone asking why Gardner didn't come in, so me any evidence whatsoever that he would have performed any better. His numbers as a QB are awful, and a lot of his live reps were against 2nd team kids. He has not taken reps in practice at QB. For everyone that begged for RR to be fired, well then own up to a loss like this. We are in the second year of a new coaching system and the team still lacks quality depth for the most part. Last years season spoiled us.

    Borges called the game as he had to. With a back up QB. We were moving the ball just fine when Denard was in there. I agree that there was 1 questionable playcall, the one where we ran it out of the I formations on 3rd and 2. Other than that, nothing was surprising given the situation. If your going to fire a coach over 1 play, there would be a lot of unemployed OC sitting on their couch.

    Things will be fine and the season is not over. Nebraska will lose. If we take care of our business we will be in the BTC game.

    Did you notice the stat given comparing Bellomy to Denard?

    Denard was in for 24 plays, and the team had 144 yards. 6 yards per play is just fine. On top of that, when Denard went down, he had the offense sitting 1st and goal to go at the 8. TD takes the lead.

    Exactly. Denard at 1st and goal on Nebraska's 8 yard line is very likely a TD. Even if he comes back to start the 2nd half, we still are ok. But losing Denard completely changed the entire game. And it's one of the biggest reasons I'm glad we are moving away from the spread.

  • The frustrating part is despite Gardner not looking great, they didn't even give him a shot. I mean after it became apparent that Bellomy wasn't getting it done, don't you at least give Gardner a shot, one drive, anything?

    I checked the play-by-play (you are more than welcome to check my math), but it appears that Denard was in for about 34 plays and 140 yards. That's about four yards a play. And Michigan kicked two short field goals last week, so I don't think a TD could be assumed.

  • I think not putting Gardner in was the right move. He has probably been getting less reps at QB than Bellomy has and would have been even less prepared.

    I checked.

    1st drive, 3 plays for 5 yards
    2nd drive, 5 plays for 20 yards
    3rd drive, 10 plays for 44 yards
    4th drive 6 plays and 66 yards when he went out.

    Total plays, 24 for 135 yards which comes out to over 5.5 yards per play. My first numbers were based off of what ESPN gave us during the game.

    I do like how each drive was getting better and better.

  • Also one thought I had on why Bellomy struggled:

    He is probably learning the playbook for the West Coast passing game we are moving to. He is not a running QB per se (has ok speed, but no Denard) so I am sure in practice they don't run those plays for him. WC offenses are based on timing and understanding between QB and the WRs - a lot of the routes have options i.e. run 10 yards upfield and do a curl or an in based on how you are being covered - and my guess is he doesn't have that understanding with the 1st team WRs as much as he would like. As such Borges probably couldn't use the playbook Bellomy is comfortable with. This leads to bad things.

    Granted, I thought his arm in terms of strength and accuracy looked bad. That first pass to Kerridge was so slow I thought somebody was going to pick it off. But if my guess about the offense and Bellomy's understanding of it is true, it is no surprise he struggled.

  • The offense was fine with denard. He drove the field twice and was getting stronger. They couldn't get to the edge to stop us from getting five every time. We would have won and the mighty Nebraska offense would have scored 13 points on the night if our d hadn't been out there for the whole second half.

    In the Illinois/Purdue/Massachusetts games....

    Bellomy had a total of 7 rushing attemps for a net 16 yards and was 1 of 4 passing attempts for 8 yards. I am not exactly sure on the total amount of plays that he was in those games. But it is of MHO.... Hoke has got to take the blame for not getting him game experience when he comfortably had the opportunity to do so in these 3 games. Don't get me wrong... I definitely like the direction Hoke has this team going in the overall scheme of things... but he clearly dropped the ball on getting Bellomy more game experience to prepare him for the situation that took place on Saturday.

    Guts and Glue (of the Maize & Blue)... a phrase that Bob Ufer used all the time to describe Ricky Leach.

    He definitely is a dual threat qb. I don't know why you think he's only learning a WCO playbook when every time he came into the game before last night he was running zone reads and never throwing the ball downfield.

  • We should have at least tried DG in the 4th quarter. He couldn't have done any worse and the offense was NOT moving the ball.
