  • Odds are climbing that he ends up in the class, IMO. People were calling for Beckman to possibly be fired (crazy after only 1 year) because the Illini looked even worse than they did under Zook, so not really a stable coaching situation there. And if I remember right he was going to possibly visit Michigan last weekend, but got convinced by Illinois to cancel and go there instead. If he went on his official and didn't solidify his committment, now confirming a late Jan visit to Ann Arbor, it doesn't bode well for him to end up at Illinois. By that point, McQuay will have decided (trending further and further away from Michigan) which means the coaches could put the full court press on Dawson.

For Michigan, prospects who have officially visited and take visits to other schools in late January rarely end up in the class, so the same probably holds true for Illinois.

I'd say you are prob on point with your thinking on this one. If he hasn't firmed up by now he prob ain't going to. With McCray being here as well that bodes well. It would have been like if the other Dawson would have visited other schools again i wouldn't think it would have prob ended well IMO. Never know tho

I'd have to agree with you on this Dizzo. And your right, he was supposed to visit this past weekend but rescheduled. I feel like only thing the coaches at Illinois can really sell to Dawson at this point is that he would play right away and not have to redshirt.

Michigan doesn't have much depth at CB either though, so the coaches can tell him he'll have an opportunity to earn playing time. Our depth chart next year is:

    Taylor - Likely starter
Countess - rehabbing ACL injury, who knows how he'll look in the Spring/Fall.
Avery - has been burned a lot as a CB and is much more suited to the Nickel spot
Hollowell - Hasn't played meaningful time at CB yet
Richardson - Redshirted and is still very small.

Ross Douglas will have the best shot to crack the 2-deep being an early enrolee, but with Dawson's size he'd definitely have a chance to play early.

Yeah, definitely a good situation at both Michigan and Illinois but chances are still a lot better that he plays early at Illinois. That said, who knows, he could end up redshirting wherever he goes because he's a raw DB that needs to add plenty of bulk and might need a year or two to do that.

  • This might not be a very popular opinion, but, after watching Dawson's tape, I can't say that I am very excited about his skill set. He is probably a great kid, and I hate to be negative about a recruit, but I am just not very impressed with his film. This is what I see:

He seems to lack closing speed and gives up too much space to opposing wideouts. He is a very tentative tackler and seems to lack physicality overall. Lastly, when he tackles, he doesn't wrap up very well.

Obviously he has really good size for a corner, which is a plus. I just don't think he is a Michigan caliber cornerback. However, I am definitely not a professional at identifying talent. So I could totally be wrong here. I am simply giving you my subjective take as an amateur. What do you guys think?

Dawson is definitely a project. I think that college coaches see his size, along with 4.39 in the forty, and feel like they can certainly mold him into something special. This is why I think he would redshirt anywhere he went, besides Illinois, who desperately needs defensive backs.

Good to hear. I really like this kid and hope we can flip him. We still are struggling to pull bigger CBs and I would rather see us take an extra one or two and try to develop their skills than pass on them because they need some technique work. Who knows, with Dawson's size and speed he even could end up at WR.

Yeah, I am just not sure how trustworthy his listed speed is. That 4.39 speed definitely does not show up in his game film. It may just be a case of him being too tentative. However, I tend to believe that if he really runs a 4.39 at his height, then he would have a bunch of big time offers. With that said, he does have decent offers, just not elite ones.

  • There is of course a possibility that he has improved a bunch as a senior. I think it was his junior film that I watched....

    ryanrago

  • I like the kids size but if his senior film isnt drastically better than his junior I dont see him having the ability to play at all as a CB early. He is tight in the hips, has a poor backpedal and needs serious work on technique. He is a project kid, great length and will come up and tackle but has similar coverage skills to Avery who is someone all Michigan fans would agree is not going to be confused as having good coverage skills. Reon has a chance to be a good player but it will take time. Lets just hope Countess comes back healthy because if he does, Taylor and Countess will be a tough combo. GO BLUE!!!! C'MON MR. GREEN!!!!

  • Thought Richardson played special teams? Might be wrong? Dawson's a project for sure but he can bide his time at Michigan and be ready in a few years as our secondary is relatively young

Dude, I live in northern Illinois along the Mississippi I can smell the dumpster fire in Champaign from here. I'm not sure what they saw in Beckman but I'd be surprised if he lasts long there.
