IMO kids that commit this early usually tend to stick. He liked OSU better. Can't really blame him given the fact that they're coached by a 2x NC, coming off an undefeated season, likely preseason top 5, and the odds on BIG favorite.

Until Michigan can shut OSU up on the field, expect more of the same. It is what it is. I'm done with the excuses. We got beat.

Seeing some things now that apparently he liked OSU more for quite some time and wanted to be a Buckeye. I wasn't over here making excuses, just trying to figure out where the commitment came from. Again, we will get a great DB haul in 2014, just sucks one of the kids we lost comes from our pipeline.

How solid do you think Webb is to OSU? After all, he cited academics as a reason for his commitment which is almost laughable.

Michael Chung at OZone (grain of salt) said that his dad mentioned that the largest factor to Damon was his close relationship with OSU DBs coach Kerry Coombs. A recruit's relationship with a particular coach or coaching staff can make a huge difference. Aside from their excellent Engineering program, one of the things that I think will be a big factor in Michigan's recruitment of Da'Shawn Hand is the excellent relationship he seems to have with the UM staff.

  • One thing that I think is worth mentioning is the impact these type of home games can have on recruiting. I know this is just one example, but I'm sure we all remember Michigan's mega haul recruiting day last year before their basketball game with Ohio State. Same thing happens in football, but these type of atmosphere games can really push kids to commit earlier than they might otherwise and certainly don't hurt in trying to convince others.

Michigan will have some of these later on in the year. OSU, MSU, and Indiana all have to come to Ann Arbor and play and I think the Wolverines have a great chance to win all three games. I'm not saying we will flip Webb or any other recruits, but I think we will get a pretty substantial boost when we reach that part of the season. Too bad only one of those games will probably be as hyped as this one (Indiana).

Thanks. I heard this as well. Sounds like Coach Coombs is one hell of a recruiter/coach for you guys.

Also I agree, I really hope our engineering program and coaching staff's relationship with Hand will pay off. We lose some we win some, this time our loss was your benefit. Enjoy the pro-bucknut day, just please don't kick while we're down.

People are upset by this because it's a CT kid. We are already in deep with Westphal and have a decent shot at Peppers. The only "must have" player coming out of Michigan next year is Malik McDowell. As long as we land him, Webb will be forgotten.

Well that, and he's a top-150 recruit, and we lost him to the bucknuts of all people. If I were to lose a best friend, I would rather them die peacefully than become a flesh-eating zombie.

  • Great get by OSU, Webb is an awesome player.

That being said, why are people freaking out about this? Do you guys not realize that there are twelve months until they sign their LOI?

Damon goes to a Michigan pipeline and this decision appears to have been very impulsive, I really doubt it sticks unless the Michigan staff and LSU staff stop pursuing him.

It wasn't all impulse, he really likes OSU and apparently always has. Some people thought he had them out front, he just wasn't being transparent with the media.

Sidenote: both Michigan and LSU stopped recruiting him last week, so the commitment makes sense and he will most likely stick.

I'm not saying I'm happy about it. And I'm not saying I don't want Webb at UM. I do. But you can't land everyone. This year, for example, we missed out on Ty Isaac and now it looks like we are in a good position to land Derrick Green. I really wanted Ty Isaac, but looking at it now Green probably is a better fit. At worst, it's a push. It's a long way to 2014 NSD. Webb's commitment to OSU might not stick. And/or we might land someone else just as good or better (e.g. Westphal, Peppers, Blanding, someone not yet on anyone's radar). I would be much, much more upset if we lost McDowell. That's all I'm saying.

Either way, oh well, on to the next one

Most shocking commitment I've ever seen.

I posted on our OSU site earlier this week I thought the Buckeyes were a threat to Michigan but never saw this coming, especially this weekend. I thought Michigan was the team to beat as did just about everyone.

Steve, any additional insights? Ohio (Urban's staff) seems to be closing on top DBs every year and we seem to be missing (though we are getting guys with good upside)? It's also especially surprising to see a Cass kid go down there this early?

We are in on a lot of top DBs again in '14 but its not clear we can close with this position group. The same is true for WR.

I remember when i used to go to the Michigan football camp, Coombs would bring his entire Colerain football team to camp at Michigan, he was the head coach at the time. He is super intense and an awesome coach. There were numerous coaches who carried more weight then him at the time but he is the one that i remember most.

I think Ty Isaac is good, but to me, Derrick Green looks like a future 2-3 time All-American in the making. He's one that I was really disappointed that he didn't end up at OSU. To me, he's the sort of back that Alabama has made a living with, in the Mark Ingram/Trent Richardson/Eddie Lacy mold. If Michigan does indeed get him (which it looks like you will), I don't look forward to playing against him. He seems like 200 yard rushing games in the making.

It's actually a joke. I think elevenwarriors has some awesome posters who are objective for the most part. On the other hand, bucknuts is a cesspool of homerism and stupidity.

Wolverine247 has incredible posters and we generally stay level headed at the best/worst of times, but MGoBlog is as volatile as RCMB. Those folks are obsessed with critiquing each others comments. It's unfortunate because MGoBlog has some high quality, loyal posters whose opinions get entirely swamped by the patheticpessimisticismness.

  • There's a loooooong time til signing day 2014. While I'm not going to hold out hope, I'll just remind everyone that we all thought Gareon Conley was solid for quite a long time. Webb's still got a whole year left at Cass and there are a lot of guys who'll be pushing for him to go to Michigan.
