Creating 80s Playlist

  • Working on finding some 80s hits I don't know to expand my playlist. So fellow 80s children and fans, what do you got as your top, yet lesser known, 80s hits? Don't waste your time telling me obvious hits by Tears for Fears, Bon Jovi, etc. I'm looking for things that aren't from the top of everyone's heads.

I may be wasting my time because these were well known but:
Purple Rain (Prince), Born in the USA (Springsteen), Precious (Pretenders), Back in Black (AC/DC), Welcome to the Jungle, Pradise City, Sweet Child o' Mine (Guns N Roses), Gimme All You Lovin, Sharped Dressed Man (ZZ Top), Centerfield (John Fogerty).

Of course Hail to the Victors works in any decade.

  • Some songs I dont know have been given, so thanks and I'll check them out. When I get a chance, I will post my playlist for all to enjoy. I had about 80 songs last time I did it, but I will probably try to even it out at a cool 100.

And for the poster who asked, my list is set to be good for a bar to play at 80s night, or a party, etc. So mostly pop, one hit wonders, etc but of course there will be some rock like Def leopard, Bon Jovi, etc.

One of the best things I've ever seen done with 80s songs was an 80s power hour. 60 great songs, 1 minute clips of each, lots of beer.

  • The only thing worse than bad music is recommending bad music to other people. Jefferson Starship's "We Built This City"? Really? I expect to hear that song in the after life....on the elevator down to hell! ;)

Why not just recommend Celine Dion's entire catalogue or Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up"? Or how 'bout the dulcet tones of Lionel Richie? Come on!

Ok, for someone who spent his years 12 to 22 in the 80's I think I can throw in my .02 for this decade:

Nine Inch Nails - Head LIke A Hole, Down In It
REM - Driver 8, Fall on Me, Can't Get There From Here, South Central Rain, Orange Crush
Depeche Mode - Black Celebration, Stripped, Never Let Me Down Again, People Are People, Just Can't Get Enough, Master and Servant, A Question of Lust, But Not Tonight
New Order - Blue Monday, Love Vigilantes, 1963, Shellshock, True Faith, Ceremony, Bizarre Love Triangle, Fine Time, Round & Round
Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf, Rio, Girls On Film, Hold Back The Rain, Is There Something I Should Know?, Planet Earth, Save A Prayer
Police - Synchronicity II, Every LIttle Thing She Does Is Magic, Invisible Sun, Re-Humanize Yourself, Message In a Bottle
Ratt - Round and Round, Lay it Down, Back For More, Wanted Man
Motley Crue - Home Sweet Home, Looks That Kill
Guns N' Roses - Welcome To The Jungle, Sweet Child O' Mine, Mr. Brownstone, Paradise City
Men At Work - Who Can It Be Now, Down Under, It's A Mistake, Overkill
Violent Femmes - Blister In The Sun, Kiss Off, Add it Up, Gone Daddy Gone
U2 - New Year's Day, Gloria, Two Hearts Beat As One, Where The Streets Have No Name, I Will Follow, Pride-In The Name of Love
Prince - DMSR, 17 Days, Let's Go Crazy, Erotic City, Controversy, Kiss, 1999, When Doves Cry, Delirious, Dirty Mind, Purple Rain, Take Me With U, Raspberry Beret, Beautiful Ones
Tears For Fears - Mad World, Shout, Pale Shelter
Ministry - Every Day is Halloween, Nature Of Love
Van Halen - Hot For Teacher, Panama, Unchained, Little Guitars, Jump, I'll Wait, Why Can't This Be Love?
Def Leppard - Photograph, Foolin', Rock Of Ages, Bringin' On The Heartbreak, Hysteria
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Cities In Dust
Public Enemy - Bring Da Noise, Don't Believe The Hype, NIght Of The Living Baseheads
Beastie Boys - Shake Your Rump, Shadrach, Hey Ladies, Paul Revere, Brass Monkey, Lookin Down The Barrel of a Gun
De La Soul - Me, Myself & I, Say No Go
Run DMC - It's Like That, Sucker MCs, Jam Master Jay, King Of Rock, Peter Piper, It's Tricky
LL Cool J - I Can't Live Without My Radio, Rock The Bells, I'm Bad, Goin' Back to Cali, Jack The Ripper

I could go on and on....let me know if you want more. Good luck!

  • I hate the trendy pop culture, mainstream 80's music....this is a reason I hated 80's parties in college, the cliche music that everyone hates. All though there is some great rock music (Rush, GNR, Def Lepard, Poison etc...) and R&B (listed above) that makes it bearable.
