Couple Questions for you guys

  • Hey guys Penn State fan here just trying to get a feel for your amazing recruiting class. Just have a couple questions for you guys.

Who is the most "over rated" recruit that you guys have gotten in the class of 2013?
Who is the most "under rated" recruit that you guys have gotten in the class of 2013?
Who is one guy, on the current team, that could have a break out season that most people have not heard about yet?

Over-rated: obviously none of us are going to say our guys are overrated, but I will say that the ridiculous hype behind Shane Morris is a dangerous thing. He's good, but some fans and sites are projecting way too much for him.

Underrated: I would have gone with Gareon Conley before his 63 overall showing on the ESPN150, so now I'll go with DeVeon Smith. He's a middling three star on most sites, but I love his running style and he is gonna do big things here

Breakout season: WR Jerald Robinson. We desperately need playmakers at WR, as we don't really have any. Despite a spectacularly boring Spring Game, Robinson has been impressive in spring ball and could be our main deep threat next year

I would do naughty things to Charles Woodson, if we're being honest. Can't wait for him to come back and get that legends patch that Des got this year

I agree with this but for a breakout player, I'd pick someone like Jibreel Black, BWC or Thomas Gordon JMO.

  • Over-rated recruit: Shane Morris? - gonna be tough for him to live up to the hype, and QB is always boom or bust.
Under-rated recruit: David Dawson - could prolly start from day 1 at guard.
Breakout Player: Thomas Gordon - could turn into the B1G's best safety this year. Has a knack for the big play and plays a pretty good center field.

    UMPat

  • Agreed. Love Shane, but the hype was getting to that 'Ron Powlus four Heisman' level. He is going to be a 5*, and deserved, but he is no savior.

Underrated: Dawson. I have been hyping him for months, long before he committed.

Break out player: Marvin Robinson. Why not. Jerald Robinson is #2.

Overrated - Joey Bosa or Billy Price, can't decide. lol
Underrated - This is ridiculous to say since he's a 5* on Scout and consensus 4*, but I think Patrick Kugler is still underrated or under hyped. Kid is a great player and you cannot undervalue having a dad who is an NFL position coach for your position. He will be ahead of the curve in terms of technique, scheme understanding, and will know the work ethic necessary to make it at the next level. To me, he is far and away the top OL prospect in our class.
Breakout player - Frank Clark (Soph DE). His athleticism/speed is something we haven't seen at DE in a long time. He will split time with Beyer, but he likely will be the leader in sacks on our D and on 3rd and long I see him causing major problems for the opposing team.

    Dizzo

  • Over Rated-Shane Morris or Logan Tuley Tillman

Under Rated-Ben Gedeon or Wyatt Shallman

    Breakout player-Jeremy Gallon

  • Overrated - Shane Morris, can't pick anyone else, they don't have the same hype level as him. He has a HUGE expectation to live up to.

Underrated - Going to have to go with Ben Gedeon, total football player who has a nose for the ball and hits with authority, he can also play sideline to sideline. Awesome prospect.

Breakout player - Craig Roh, he has gained a lot of weight and seems to realize the responsibility he has as a senior on Team 133. I have a feeling, from what I saw in Spring Practice videos, that he will do very good at SDE this year and pick up a bunch of sacks and TFLs.

I general I don't think talking about who is overrated is a very good discussion anyone. We all know recruits follow these boards, especially when they are non-VIP posts for anyone to read. All of our recruits were talking about the ESPN150 today on Twitter, so not much good can come from recruits potentially reading a thread where fans are debating who isnt as good as their ranking..

Gives them motivation. With Shane though, he is an awesome prospect and the only reason I would consider him "overrated" is because of the hype he will face throughout his career.

How is Taco overrated? He is an athletic beast with unlimited potential. You aren't high on any of Michigan's 3*s? Have you watch any of their film?

  • not comparatively speaking. to be underrated you cant be rated very highly so it would seem likely that it should be a 3 star guy and yes i watched film.
and as far as taco its just my opinion but its hard not to atleast understand the ohio state fans arguments about him not starting in high school

Motivation is constructive criticism coming from coaches and experts at camps who give you things to work on. Anonymous message board posters who most likely aren't experts in football just probably doesn't provide motivation, it probably just causes a Tweet like 'smh at some fans.'

Plus, Shane could never live up to his hype, but the way he has been the leader in this recruiting class, always being around when kids come in on visits, keeping in touch with people, attending camps to support future teammates, etc, he's already been successful for Michigan so hard to call him overrated.

SMH. He starts for his HS school, the only time he doesn't play is when his team uses the 3-4.

He isn't an overrated prospect in my eyes, he has all the tools to be special and has the mental aspect to have success at the next level. The only reason I have him as my overrated prospect is because other Michigan fans will be disappointed if he doesn't win 3 Heismans.

You know so much about our football team, you're right. How could we be so stupid.

None of our recruits are overrated. Many of them are underrated. Many of them are rated correctly.

I would take our 17 over your 9 any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Hey guys Penn State fan here just trying to get a feel for your amazing recruiting class.

    Overrated:

Its really hard to name a guy I feel is overrated. There are a lot of kids with wildly varying appraisals. For example, Gareon Conley is ranked somewhere in the 60s on ESPNs 150 today. That would probably be a little high, but he is a meh 3* on here and Rivals. DeVeon Smith, Taco Charlton, Ben Gedeon, Jourdan Lewis, Wyatt Shallman, and David Dawson are all the same way. Its hard to say that any of the other OLinemen are overrated because they are all consistently rated mid-ranged 4* and certainly look the part.

Michigan fans do have too much invested in Shane Morris at this point, but I don't see him being particularly overrated nationally by the scouting services.

If you put a gun to my head and made me choose, however, I would probably go with Mike McCray. If I remember correctly he is ranked as a fairly high 4* by at least a couple of services, and I'm not so sure. He also very likely could have really benefited from his early commitment, as others that I liked a bit more were later turned away.

And I must clarify that I am extremely pleased to have McCray in blue.

    Underrated:

See above. If Gareon Conley hadn't received such a high rating from ESPN I would have said him. Other than that him, you are left with a lot of four stars, some consensus. Hard to say they are underrated. I do think that Khalid Hill will turn out to be a really valuable contributor by the time he leaves, but I'm not sure he's underrated at a 3*.

Since I'm drawing a blank, I'll stretch here and go with Chris Fox at DT. Yeah, he's the highest rated of the highly rated offensive tackles and looks to have a bright future at the spot. But his highlight videos feature him prominently on the other side of the ball and the kids a beast. Penn State took Webb off the board and realistic elite nose tackle prospects are few and far between. Barring a big change, I would have no problem seeing what Fox could do on defense when he gets on campus.

    Break Out Candidate:

Michigan has the benefit of returning contributors just about everywhere on the depth chart. The one place they don't is defensive tackle and people are mostly just talking about Will Campbell, the local 5* getting his last chance to shine.

The other new guy in the middle is Jibreel Black, and he is my pick. You might have heard his name before, as he saw meaningful snaps in both his freshmen and sophomore years. This spring he has been making the seemingly awkward transition from from the weakside end to the three-tech. He has been putting on a good deal of weight, however, and the coaches think the change in gap assignment will really suit his skills better.

He may be a returning contributor, but in the spring game he looked like a whole new lineman to me.
