Scale of 1-10, 1 is not even thinking twice about this game, 10 is shaking in your boots.
I think I'm at a 4. Michigan matches up pretty well with this team. SDSU is a poor man's Michigan, star PG, not much D or rebounding. I think the talent and home court will be enough to get this done.
The only way i would put any tourney game at a 1 is if we were playing a 16 seed. So i will go a 2.
We only played 4 teams with worse defenses. I just see us scoring fairly easily.
Hopefully we come out with some defensive intensity, get up a few, and go from there.
I forgot to give a number. 3 I guess.

I'm at a 3. I took a look at their schedule and Brian's writeup on Mgoblog. These two factors helped to put my mind at ease.
People are falling in love with the sheek upset pick because they see a star at PG and assume Michigan can't match up with him. I think Burke is a damn good on-the-ball defender, and can do enough to take Wolters out of his game. The rest of their team does not really worry me. They are very undersized.
At about a 2 or 3 for SDSU. I think Nate Wolters is a stud and the more I read about him the more I grow to respect him. However, unfortunately for them, their best/(only?) asset is countered by our national player of the year. We will take that game by ~15.
If we get by SDSU and VCU advances as expected, my fear level for that game would jump to an 8. I do not want to face VCU. I do think we would advance past VCU to the sweet 16, but my comfort level would be very low entering that game.
Here's to Trey Burke!
Actually, I think Michigan matches up well with VCU. There's always a draw back to play insane full-court press defense. Look at when Michigan played Clemson a few years back. They did that diamond press the entire game. And if it wasn't for a goofy comeback at the end, Michigan would have won by 10-15.
If you can break that pressure, which I think Michigan has had very little trouble doing this season, VCU is very beatable.
I want VCU. Their press does not scare me!
Ya, 2 or 3. Was more worried yesterday when all the talking heads on ESPN were yakking about "Well Michigan is the better team and they should win, BUT..."
and then I remembered that ESPN are idiots and the upset that "everyone sees coming" is almost never the one that actually happens.
and then I looked at SDaSU and decided they aren't very good.
I'm at a 0. We On.
"Those Who Stay...Will be Champions"
THJ is a miserable passer. He turns it over via an idiotic pass multiple times a game. A VCU press would only exacerbate that. Furthermore, Jordan Morgan is clumsy and our freshmen are freshmen.
Again, I don't think VCU would beat us, but they would be a headache I'd rather not encounter. They remind me of Air Force from football this past season; an inferior team with a whacky system that can win any given night.
Tim averages exactly 2 turnovers a game and most of those are trying to force something in the half court. I am perfectly ok with him handling the press.
He should average zero.
But in all honesty, while his turnover numbers may not reflect it, there is at the very least once a game where he's controlling the ball and passes it directly to the opposing team. There are bad passes, there are forced passes, and then there are THJ passes.
Does he make such passes all game every game? Hell no. He's a fine player. But I have lost my mind far too many times because of miserable passes on his part. That is why a press scares me in this case. He often picks the ball up prematurely, begins losing his balance, and forces a pass.
Bottom line is that when the ball isn't in Burke's hands, ball security is a major issue for this team IMO. But that's all the negativity I'll provide the board for today. Neither Michigan nor VCU has advanced yet, so i'm refocusing on the SDSU Wolter's.
The only way he would average zero is if he averaged 0 minutes played as well.
3 pops into my head.
I'll go with 3.
Would I be too crazy in saying they should start Burke, Hardaway, GR3, Morgan, and McGary?? SDSU is very small, and rebounds for crap, so I would like to see some size early to settle in on the glass.
SDSU fan here.
Hoping for a good game. I think you guys have it about right with the worry meter, but you never know.
Last year in the tournament virtually the same team gave a very athletic Baylor team all they could handle and then some. We were within 3 with about a minute to go. This is the same team, basically, having only graduated 1 senior last year.
What you will see from us is great team play. Wolters is a stud, but he gets a lot of assists to go along with points. The team as a whole is undersized against big conference teams, but they all can hit the 3. If they are hitting the 3, Michigan is going to find themselves in a real basketball game. If not it will be over early.
We did have 1 quality win this year, beating New Mexico in The Pit.
Good luck to you in the tourney!
Woah! A real, live SDSU fan!
Thanks and good luck.
Good luck to you guys as well. I love teams like South Dakota State. I think you guys drew a bad matchup with Michigan. Too much alike with Michigan being the more talented team. Could make for a fun high scoring game though.
Just like to see what the big schools say about us :)
Last year Baylor fans were talking a lot of trash, and walked away saying, dang, we got lucky.
I think Michigan will be too athletic for us, but I hope we represent well enough and Wolters gets his shot in the NBA. The guy has amazing vision, sort of a poor man's Steve Nash. He even looks a lot like Jimmy Chitwood....
I think we'll win, but any team that can hit 3's in bunches is scary to play come tournament time. So I'll say I'm at a 4.5.
Wolters and Burke should be a great matchup for both guards. Wolters will have to prove his worth defensively against Burke, but I'm not sure if we'll have Burke on Wolters defensively. We might need a longer guy like THJ against him, as Burke is pretty small, but looking at your roster it looks like all your starters are above 6'4 or so. So maybe I'm wrong and Burke will matchup with Wolters all game. That'd be fun.
Thanks for stopping by, hope to see you more over the week
And best of luck!
This game worries me, but every game worries me. It's very possible that GRIII, Stauskas, and Hardaway get cold and we lose. It's also possible that all three get hot and we make a run to the FF or so. We'll see what we can bring.
I'll put my meter at a 5. After losing to Penn State, I refuse to look past anyone.
Their starting big man is listed at 6'8 235 and shoots 41% from three. That could be an issue if we don't keep them in front of us. I think Burke and Wolters will cancel each other out for the most part, so for me it's about supporting casts. We have an advantage inside if we so choose to utilize it...McGary could have a career day if he holds on to the ball. We just can't let them shoot wide open three after three, which has been a problem. I think it'll be close for awhile but their depth is poor and our talent and athleticism will win out. I see the starters all around 30 minutes and about a 12 point win.
5. I'd call it "concerned but cautiously optimistic".
We ought to win based on talent alone but our perimeter defense is pretty terrible so expect the Rabbits to shoot and score many many treys and they are big enough to stick it inside to a big and score easy points. Shootouts are never high % wins.
