I had some mentions in my Twitter last night about 2014 QB Wilton Speight out of Richmond, VA. Speight is someone I covered a couple times back at Tremendous and up until about a few weeks ago hadn't been in much contact with the Michigan coaches.
That has changed though. According to Speight, he's been on the phone with Coach Borges four times within the last week or so and their staff has contacted his staff twice. Bright and early on Friday morning, Coach Hecklinski will be out to watch him in a throwing session.
"Suddenly, Michigan has gotten really interested in me with the calls to my staff and then my conversations with Coach Borges. I'll be working out for the WRs coach on Friday; I was told that he'll have a lot of influence on who they decide to offer."
In regards to a commitment on the spot, Speight said the coaches would prefer that whichever quarterback is offered to make a quick decision. That being said, Speight is not expecting an offer on Friday and they've told him to be patient with the staff.
Tomorrow morning, I'll be on the phone with him to see how it went.
Film is in his player profile.

Are you that impressed Steve? I'm not. If our first offer doesn't go out to Cornwell and Henderson....I will be baffled.
"Those Who Stay...Will be Champions"
The coaches are probably very close to releasing QB offers. Thus .....
1. The coaches see something the rest of us do not see.
2. The coaches are preparing him as a back-up option, in the event #1 does not commit as quickly as they would like.
3. Michigan is taking 2 QBs in 14' - one is elite (i.e. Cornwell), and the other a work-in-progress.

I'm in agreement with the majority: I think Cornwell and Henderson are the two best quarterbacks they're looking at, with Cornwell probably being the top.
I will be seriously bummed if Cornwell doesn't get an offer. They only issue I can see is maybe the UM staff is concerned it will be a major battle between us and Bama and they want more of a sure thing. But I think that's a crap way of approaching recruiting. Offer your #1 guy and give him a reasonable amount of time to decide (say by early April) and if he hasn't pulled the trigger for UM by then you offer #s 2 and 3 and say you are going to take the first who commits.
Cornwell already said he wants to commit pretty soon....and he sounds really really interested in UM if we offer. As far as Speight goes, I just wasn't impressed with his arm strength. That's really the only knock I have on him.
Speight is ok, but he would not even be in my top 4.
This early in the process, I don't think the rankings really matter and it looks like he has some good schools looking at him.
In his interview on the Mblock, he makes it clear that the coaches intend to offer one qb and receive a commitment from that one qb.
Nobody on this board can define the word regression.... but it sure gets used a lot.
There seems to be two different stories on this. One has Borges going. The other has Heck going. I guess we will have to wait until tomorrow to see which one is right.
I would assume the right answer corresponds to whoever Speight spoke to last: Steve or Coach Brown.
