Mattison likes rotating. I would not be surprised to see Wormley, Strobel, Pipkins out there for part of our games.
Stealing Sparty's recruits and owning them on the field since 1898
Do you ever wonder if you have too much time on your hands if you're posting on a rivals message board after getting banned on your home board?
Or, put another way, using Rivals:
James Ross -4 -star
Ben Braden - 3-star
Devin Funchess - 3 star
Matt Godin - 3-star
Mario Ojemudia- 3-star
AJ Williams - 3-star
Ben Gedeon - 4 star (tOSU has to be a player, especially with Anzalone leaving)
Maurice Hurst Jr - 3 star
Patrick Kugler - 4 star
Wyatt Shallman - 4 - star (and I'm not convinced that he goes to MSU)
Would those guys really make the last 2 classes the "best" Dantonio has had? I would have liked to have several of them (I'm not sure the staff was sold on Funchess), particularly Braden, but MSU ended up with 3 4-stars per Rivals and 4 per Scout/247. There was only 1 2-star (Fennell), so I doubt that James Ross and a bunch of 3-stars would have elevated MSU that high. Keep in mind that State could only take 17-18 kids last year, so you're talking about swapping those guys out for current commits.
In '12, State already has a pair of 4-star LBs committed, so I don't know if they'd take Gedeon.
Where UM is really making it's $$ is at the top, where they're pulling the high 4-stars away from Bama/tOSU, etc. Did you know that Dantonio has signed exactly 2 top 10 OH players in his tenure: Antonio Jeremiah in 2007 (#4) and Skylar Schofner (now Burkland) in 2010 (#8). Burkland didn't shoot up the charts until after his SR All Star game; he was a high 3-star before that and ranked somewhere in the teens.
The point is that UM isn't suddenly causing MSU to recruit much worse than they have been. Now, UM may be preventing MSU from taking a step forward in recruiting, but that's a debate for another day.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
Oh come on. I don't care how many stars are next to their name, true FR on either line very rarely make an impact. Clowney is most definitely the exception rather than the rule.
It can enable them to make big strides during their soph year (see Will Gholston), but their true FR year they're still going to be far down the learning curve. If your DL relies heavily on true FR this year, whatever their star rankings, UM 's D is going to take a definite step backwards. Now, that'll help your team quite a bit in '13 and beyond, but in the current year, it's not a good thing to be playing true FR linemen.
In the rotation isn't a bad thing.
exactly, the FR aren't gona be starters (other than possibly pipkins takin over) they may come in for a few plays or a drive here and there to give the starters a rest
As xxmgobluexx said, they will mostly be apart of a rotation, or maybe more significant role based on unforeseen circumstances.
You should use 247, Then you'd be adding 6 4 stars.
This is Michigan, fergodsakes.
It should get to a point where we start using 247 instead of Rivals. 2011 seems like the best starting point.
Use Rivals for 2002-2010 classes
Use 247 for 2011 and beyond classes
i can care less about everyone's arguments in this thread. Its the same thing back and fourth just like tBB, that's why i don't go to that thread anymore and so much delusion on how recruiting doesn't matter. anyways, I'm gonna stop reading right here. i just have to vent on this comment by copemoney. I HATE when someone comes up with bullshit and talks out of their ass when trying to argue a point. if your gonna come over here, come with facts and don't make things up. show me where hoke ever offered playing time to true frosh. you can talk to every single recruit that hoke recruited and they will all say the same thing including their parents, "hoke is a straight shooter, that's why we like him. he doesn't lie and tells the truth no matter what. he doesn't offer playing time and says your gonna have to work hard during practice and nothing is guaranteed. you will have to earn your spot and the best player is going to play"
A few plays is fine; if they're prominently featured on your DL, I don't think that bodes well for your team this year.
It's just my opinion though, and it'll play out on the field one way or the other. Good news is that the season's less than 2 months away. I'll leave you guys alone; discussion was actually pretty good and with minimal flaming.
Excellent point. Facts only please.
Who are you quoting by the way?
Not banned on my home board.
For the most part, people aren't expecting the true freshmen to be prominently featured. At DT, they have to get past Senior Will Campbell, Juniors, Black and Washington, Sophomores Ash and Wilkins. At SDE they have to get past Roh and Heitzmen, at WDE they have to get past Beyer and Clark.
The one most people point to is 4*/5* Pipkins, but even then most aren't expecting much more than a rotation player.
Prior to spring ball, UM's DL coach didn't think that he had starting talent on the (at the time) current roster. So I think you might be a little more dependant on incoming talent than what you think. The likeliest starting candidate, according to the DL coach, was Pipkens.

Before Spring ball, and link?
Are you the one that claimed you sat next to the Dline coach at Michigan on a plane ride and he gave you all sorts of info?
One in the same. I know you have no reason to believe me, and that's fine, but I couldn't keep from pointing that out.
And I wouldn't say he gave me "all sorts of info", we just had a good conversation. He seemed like a pretty genuine, good guy, albeit very talkative.
Regardless, that was before the Spring.
As I stated, Pipkins is the guy most seeing playing. He has to pass several guys already on the roster first.
This is true, and therefore would not reflect any player improvement since then, most notably Campbell.
