Ok, people keep talking about what will happen to all the players, but what about the coaching staff? Suppose there's a scenario like this:
50 scholarships lost
5 year bowl ban
What are your thoughts on whether they'd stay on board. I mean, these are talented coaches with untarnished resumes. PSU would have to pay me a king's ransom to pick up the pieces. It would take 5 years to get back to square one, then it would take years more to rebuild. O'Brian and his staff could be spending much of the rest of their career on the hope that they eventually are able to get PSU back to a powerhouse. All for a tragedy they had NOTHING to do with.
Give me your thoughts.
I think they stay. At least O'Brien stays i should say. Here came there with the challenge in frknt of him already. If he's a loyal human being and caring person then he will stay. He could stamp his own historic reputation there if he gets them through this
I partly agree with you, but depending on how bad the sanctions are, I just don't know. I mean, how old is the guy? He may be thinking, "hey, I've got 10 years of coaching left in me". Well, it could take ten to get through this, then he's knocking on retirement. There's such thing as being loyal, but that's just unfair to ask of a guy.
I'll admire O'Brian a ton if he stays as coach, but I will not be casting any stones at him if he doesn't.
It's a bit late for any of them to bail honestly. O'Brien won't get a head coaching gig this close to the season and all staffs around the country are full for the most part. So I'm sure they are all talking to their agents about it, but they may not have many options right now. And if they somehow manage to get the team through this adversity with a winning record, it would look much better on the resume than walking away.
According to wikipedia, Bill O'Brien is 42 years old. (He will turn 43 in October.)

Alright, I agree with everything you wrote. So, I guess the real decision would come a year or two down the road. Jobs will open up, and it could get enticing. But yeah, it's not like there's going to be any jobs open for 2012 with camp right around the corner.
yea definetly expect they would stay this season tho o'brien may have "health issues" or some such thing after that and leave the program. Not that any coach would fake that or anything (hmm, hmm) but you know, it does happen from time to time.
Whatever he decides is cool with me. This (what happens in the morning) is obviously not what he signed up for. However, I said the same thing about AG down in Miami and apparently he just can't help himself to make it worse.
I got to believe that one reason O'Brien got the job is he was willing to take the risk. Everyone knew this was a possibility.
These sanctions could drive Penn State down to Indiana level for a decade. If I was a 42 year-old former offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, I would be bailing on that sinking ship.
50 scholarships lost

No one would stay at PSU.
I think he'll stay because he has the best job security in the nation. Who would want to take PSU job now?
Check out my 2 deep of UM's base 4-3 under defense, let me know your thoughts. Last updated: 3/28/12
But head coaching jobs pay big time money. You think he'd leave for a coordinator position? I dont. Dolla dolla bills ya'll
Exactly. Looking at it from a personal perspective it is a win-win for O'Brien. If he fails, it isn't his fault, it's JoePa's. If he succeeds, even moderately, he is an amazing coach and could go just about anywhere.
This is Michigan, fergodsakes.
That leaders division is a cake walk now.....Ohio's and Wiscy's to lose
I'm sure any FBS team would or the Mac or Wac or something
SO I guess WIscy will cake wak to the B1G Championship this year....No OSU or PSU.
Quick, bet on Wiscy to make the B1G Championship this year before the Vegas bookies wake up
Exactly. And any future interviews you do, it's a pretty easy answer when somebody asks you to describe you you'd handle adversity. It might not be a fun few years, but at worst O'Brien is going to come out of it looking like a guy with true integrity who has head coaching experience and shown a capacity to handle significant adversity. All while being paid millions of dollars with no expectations... not actually sounding too bad to me right now.
There are a lot of coaches from the MAC, C-USA, or WAC who would love to get a job at Penn State if O'Brien goes back to the NFL.
thats very true
Bill O'Brien going to be interviewed on the Dan Patrick show by Bonnie Bernstein on ESPN2 very shortly in case anyone interested.
Heck... worth tuning in to just see her!!

Guts and Glue (of the Maize & Blue)... a phrase that Bob Ufer used all the time to describe Ricky Leach.
Not to be "that guy"... but I just can't get over her gigantic nose.
You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.
