But what about the idea of reserving some spots for the best prospects available regardless of position? If the coaches could have told the recruits something like "We're taking 5 OL for sure so if you are amongst the first 5 OL to commit, you've got a spot. Otherwise you have to take your chances on being one of the best prospects available." I sure hope they said something like this since according to TVH, Pocic said the coaches told him he still had a spot available to him.
I have seen this quote 'we are only taking 5' on every board out there. Where is this from. Did Hoke or Funk say this, or does the link to the link to the linked source wind up back on a message board by some poster. 'We are taking five' is way different than 'we're only taking five'.
Aquaman posted on mgoblog that Pocic had told him that Hoke told Pocic there would be a spot available for him, but to keep it private because the staff pulled offers from others.
It that is an accurate retelling of the events, it troubles me a great deal.
Which part? The part about Hoke asking for it to be kept private or Pocic obviously not keeping it private? Assuming the recruits knew about the whole reserving spots for best available prospects, I'm OK with Hoke asking for it to be kept private. There's no reason everyone has to know whom Hoke considers best prospects available.
The five spots thing was said by one of the OL commits, I can't remember whom. That said, I am not sure if this was an absolute marker, or a target. Targets can move; an absolute marker is a different story.
Again, trust that Hoke knows what he is doing. It will all work out...trust me.
According to MGOBLOG and specifically TomVH he has changed his tune and now saying OL is full...
MGoBlog obsessively covers University of Michigan football, basketball, hockey, baseball, lacrosse, and volleyball. It also has lots of charts.
I don't really think Hoke should be intentionally withholding information that is very important and relevant to recruits college choices.
Rethinking it, its entirely possible that he is just trying to avoid alienating recruits he may want to offer if a decommit happens, but I still have reservations about this.
Basically it sounds like he has been going around telling recruits that Michigan is taking five and full, but he told Pocic something different.

I can tell you one thing. The problems that we do have with recruiting are good ones. It's better than having to stretch to get these 4* guys and settle for 3*s. We're evaluating all elite talent. This is awesome. I feel blessed
"Those Who Stay...Will be Champions"
I somewhat disagree. Yes, having too many elite recruits for too few spots is a "good" problem to have, but if that leads Michigan down a road where the coaching staff is exploiting this position to the detriment of recruits and players, a la Alabama, then it becomes a huge problem.
Finding out that Hoke is taking advantage of players would turn me against this staff far quicker than a 3-9 record.
I don't get why it's important and relevant. Why is it important to Lisle's (just as an example, I have no idea if his offer was pulled) college choice that Pocic still has an offer? I'd think it's only important that Lisle knows that unless something changes, he no longer has one from Michigan. I'm not sure if this is what you mean by your 2nd sentence, but I'd think that telling Lisle that Pocic still had one is just throwing it in Lisle's face that Hoke values Pocic much more highly.
If Lisle doesn't think it is important that Hoke would withdraw his scholarship offer but not Pocic, then great. But it should at least be Lisle's judgment as to what is important and what is not.
I guess we'll just disagree on this one. I just don't see saying that to a kid. "Listen, we've filled up on the guaranteed OL spots so unless something happens, you no longer have a spot. At this point, we'd only take OL commitments from Pocic, Tunsil, and McGovern because we think they're better than you."
I think it's more of an integrity issue with our commitments. We told them we are only taking 5, which is the main reason LTT and Kugler jumped on board so fast. How would Hoke look if he went back on his word just a week later?
Note, I have no problem with Hoke not being brutally honest about telling players where they rank on his list. My problem is with him telling Pocic to not let the "We are still open to another" truth of the matter out of the bag.
If he is pulling offers and telling those kids that Michigan is full, Michigan should be full. Period.
If Meyer were to do that, mgoblog would blow up with a 20 page thread of people calling him "Urban Liar".
EDIT: Maybe I am expecting a little too much from that angle. I am still fairly certain that he has told the current commits that he is only taking five, which would make taking another much worse anyways.
I would agree with you if we know for a fact that they were told "we are ONLY taking 5." Do we know that's what we told them rather than "we are taking first 5, after that you take your chances?"

Do you disagree with the idea of reserving spots for the best in general or is it just that you want to make sure that the recruits understand that we are reserving spots for the best? If you're OK with the idea, then there's no such thing as being "Full. Period."
To be honest, at this point I'm not sure. I recognize that there is a pretty expansive grey area about what information is available to recruits and how it is presented.
My main issue is not with what he told other recruits, but what he told Pocic to keep a secret. If I were a recruit or the parent of a recruit, I would want to know if the team was actually full, or if Hoke was just saving the spot for the best available.
Who cares its all speculation. Hoke is a "Michigan man" trust him. All of this negativity is annoying and bad for recruiting. Dont you think recruits look at these boards? Until anybody has a true source none of this is true
I agree that this is all speculation at this point. I for one am willing to give the coaches the benefit of the doubt.
If any recruits are looking at this, I'd like them to take away that our fan base has members who care very much about the coaches treating them fairly, and not just about winning national championships.
Agreed. This isn't their first rodeo and people have nothing but the best things to say about our coaching staff. I trust their judgement.
Agreed. Were all one nation under hoke and all striving for the best thing at Michigan which will be done the Michigan way. All I'm saying its bad p.r and we all know what happen to rr and the bad pr he got during his tenure
1. I support these players. I support Hoke because he appears to be the best choice to lead these players.
2. I take pride that being a Michigan fan means I don't have to have the crisis of conscience that comes with having Nick Saban for a head football coach.
3. Michigan's willingness to accept Pocic is an open question that has discussed quite publicly, and these recruits all know what Hoke is saying to them privately, so nothing I have said here should have a negative effect on their commitment to Michigan.
Bivin and McGovern to ND.
