Hi, a buddy and I have a tradition where we visit a new college football stadium every year and cheer for the home team. This year we are coming to Michigan for the game against MSU.
Please post any bars, places to eat/visit, and anything else we must do. I would greatly appreciate it
Also, where is a good spot to buy tickets? If anyone has two extra I'd love to buy. We will be wearing Michigan gear and cheering the Wolverines on to a hopeful victory.
Thanks for your help.
Good stuff. Check out Ashley's or Red Hawk on State Street (bars). Local spots I'd suggest eating at are blimpie burger and Zingermans. For a nice evening dinner you should head to Main Street. It's just a few blocks off campus. There are very nice restaurants/steakhouses you should definitely consider if money is not scarce. Chop House is one of the most popular. There are other good places around campus to eat but nothing I'd say are musts.
The college pregames take place primarily on State and Hill, the elders party on the golf course which I've heard is sweet and other random spots close to the big house. Just make sure you walk around right before gametime and enjoy the atmosphere. You'll most likely end up on Hoover on your way to the stadium, where there are always people selling tickets. Try to find one of the friendly black dudes or a drunk student for the lowest prices.
Thanks for the response. I really appreciate it.
Depending when you're there -
Breakfast places :
Cafe Felix (http://www.cafefelix.com/) - Main Street - more expensive, upscale, French breakfast place
Angelo's (http://angelosa2.com/hours.cfm) - Campus - Classic student breakfast / greasy spoon
Zingerman's - Main Street area - Extremely good, but expensive, sandwiches ($15+ for a sandwich)
Blimpie Burger - Campus - famous greasy spoon burger joint just outside West Quad dorm
Cottage Inn / Pizza House - Campus - two classic Ann Arbor pizza joints, get a tall Bell's (local Michigan brewery) on draft
Grizzly Peak - Main Street - brewery
Arbor Brewing Company - Main Street - brewery
Jolly Pumpkin - Main Street - another brewery
Main Street area - plenty of choices in general depending what you're looking for
The Arena - Main Street - Sports bar on Main Street that will be showing all the Friday night games and people playing billiards, etc.
Ashleys - Campus - laid back bar
-- can't recommend any student body nightlife because I'm sure it's changed since I graduated
You can also just bounce around tailgates and tell your story of who you root for in SEC country and how you are checking out the stadium, I'm sure you'll get a ton of free food and drinks that way. The Golf course and Ann Arbor Pioneer high school (across from the stadium) are jammed with tailgaters.
I'm not sure as far as tickets, they'll be hard to find. Stubhub and scalpers will be available, but probably a lot of money.
For places to go: Blimpy Burger is a great Ann Arbor legend. Absolutely delicious and certainly an experience. It'll be really crowded after the game, but if you can go on Friday or Sunday if you're in town, that'd be your best bet. Another place is Zingerman's, another famous Ann Arbor spot. Great deli food. Same for Maize&Blue deli. The final uniquely Ann Arbor place to go is the Pizza House. Pizzas, shakes, cheese bread, chapatis, and all delicious.
Also make sure you see the Law Quad, even though it's under construction. Very beautiful place. The Ross School of Business and Diag are other awesome places to see.
For tailgating, make sure you walk down State Street for the college experience and down Hoover. There's also the golf course to hang out if you choose. But as long as you're wearing Michigan stuff, any frat on State Street will gladly let you in to have a beer or ten.
PM me if you'd like, I'm a student here and really excited for the game.
This is going to be a really weird day for you. As soon as you start walking around and talking to people you will probably be highly uncomfortable, everyone will be cordial and friendly. Generally everyone will have a high football IQ and people will be having a good time having cocktails, but they will be upright and coherent instead of crawling through their own vomit. Ann Arbor is beautiful and clean and all the food everyone listed seems as if its the highest on the must eat lists.
We are happy to have you....have a great time
Knights steak house is also very good, little pricey IIRC though.
Go to Bukkake's for the best night life....If you need directions just ask any female student.
Thanks again, I appreciate it.
Try to get near the tunnel entrance about 30 minutes before kickoff and watch the band make their way to the stadium. They have a sweet march and chant. Then, you'll want to make sure you're in your seat to see the band "TAKE THE FIELD"
If you stay after the game, head up to campus and take in the campus after a big win (hopefully).
