Meaningless, nice to be ranked that high though. I think VT is a team to watch out for this year, Loaded on defense and Logan Thomas is a stud.
I was about to say that I think that might be a bit ambitious of a pre-season ranking, but I think my expectations were beaten into submission by the RichRod era. We've got a damn good team, and looking at this list, I think it's actually completely reasonable for us to be 8th. I need to get used to consistent top-10 teams again.
This means we're better than Ohio State, correct?
Pointless or not, they still matter. Had Michigan started last year in the top 20 they would have finished top 10.
Yeah, I think 8 just about right..I don't see anyone below us that should definitely be ahead of us, don't really think we should be ahead of anyone above us. I think Georgia and Oregon may be at least slightly overrated, and I think USC should be #1, but seems fine generally.
we did finish top 10, didn't we? Or are you talking about pre-bowl game?
Michigan finished 12th in the AP 9th in the USA.

no ohio st? not even in the honorable mention, this due to their suspension? I can't imagine most coaches think their that bad of a team...
They are ineligible, plus they went 6-7 last year and lose a few key pieces on the offensive side of the ball. They aren't a top 25 team regardless.
Yeah, they didn't even receive any votes, which seems a bit harsh. But at the same time, they finished 6-7 last year and looked completely inept offensively except for the Michigan game. I suppose the thinking is it'll take Urban more than a year to get them back to their traditional level.
Or it could be as simple as preseason rankings are basically "where did you finish last year?" plus "are you a non-powerhouse team that lost its star player?"
Any list that does not have Ohio St #1 is bogus. Everyone knows they are going 12-0
#'s 4,5,7,13,15, and 18 will all disappoint.... Va Tech will be better than 20...prolly end up in top 12
"Those Who Stay...Will be Champions"
Ohio State, Penn State and North Carolina cannot be included in the Coaches Poll due to being ineligible for the postseason. They can be included in all of the other polls though.
mildly overrated. I'll take it over being "right where we belong" or underrated. THe higher we start the season, the more room for error throughout the year.
Who do you think belongs above us?
No Clue. Don't know enough about any other team to say that one belongs ahead of us. Just hard to believe that we trot out the 8th best team in the nation given what we lost on the D-line, WR, TE, and Molk.
oh for sure, they'll never lose anothwer game while urbies the coach
What makes OSU a top 15 team? Schedule should have nothing to do with it. The preseason poll is based on who is supposedly the best team, not who has the easiest schedule.
OSU went 6-7 last year. They lost their top 2 OL. They lost their top RB. They lost their top WR. They are installing a new offense. Exactly what screams top 15 team?
Scares me a little being that high on the ranking with the schedule we have. Set up for a letdown but being Meeeechigan the boys will fight through it and finish top 5 with a rosebowl bid, and a B1G title in hand!
I agree. I think we have a few questions that need to be answered but so do many of the teams around us. Thats why rankings before 4 or 5 weeks into the season are meaningless for the most part.
I think we are highly ranked in part because we play Alabama the first game. We are easily a top 25 team, and if we lose to Alabama, the #2 team in the country and defending national champs.....we will drop in the polls, yet likely be within the top 25. Any current rank of 15 or lower and we would probably be out of the top 25 with a loss to bama.
Top 5-10 defense? Is this the same defense that got shredded by Michigan last year? I'd be willing to bet OSU doesn't end up with more than 1 AA on the DL. Also willing to bet OSU doesn't get two DBs on first team all B1G. Big Ten has too many good DBs for that to happen. MSU has a better chance of landing two than OSU. You are speaking a lot about potential, but not results.
Rod Smith? What has he proven? Hall is going to be coming back from injury. Can't really buy these two, although Hall should certainly be much better than Smith. I don't see how you can think you are better losing Herron and gaining Smith.
Being favored in 10 or 12 games against a very easy schedule doesn't warrant a top 15 ranking. OSU's schedule is a joke. Cal as the premier OOC game?
Boise State is probably favored in all their games. Should that make them preseason #1?
Very reasonable on defense. I fully expect Shazier to easily be 1st team all big 10 provided he stays healthy. Wouldn't surprise me if he threatens for an All American team to be honest.
RB's - How can you say that? Rod Smith has proven nothing and has been in the dog house, I believe he has fumbling issues too. Hyde and Hall are solid, but neither of them are better than Herron was, though you could argue Hall's talent + fit in the new offense would make him equal or slightly better. Don't see it with the other two at all though. Isn't Hall hurt though (or am I confusing him with someone else)?
TE - Agree
QB - Interested to see how he develops
OL - Major question mark, I don't see it being average by big ten standards either.
WR - Haven't done much and are transitioning to a new offense. Could really help them or hurt them. Too early to tell, but they seem to be one of the weaker OSU WR groups that I can remember.
