I know before the season started .. most of us on here wouldn't have doubted the fact that Fitz was gonna be drafted in the upcoming draft .. but NOW? He's struggling big time this year. Can anyone see him coming back for his senior year? Cause I can.
I dont think it would be the ideal situation for either party (Fitz or us) .. but it could happen.
He's a very good blocker
right. fitz is struggling big time. he is running very timid and is slow to find a hole. he usually just bounces it out and gets run down. when he cant find a hole he runs sideways and nets little to nothing. i havent seen him hit a hole at full speed since last season.
we NEED a RB to step up, and at this point Fitz has yet to do it. rawls looks good too and runs with power and some speed. i think giving him 4-5 touches in a row is a good thing.
Our best offense for Denard is run out of the shotgun. Rawls is not a spread type of RB. Do we give up the spread just to get Rawls in the game and take away our best offensive weapon in Denard?
Opposing defense are slanting away from where Fitz lines up. When he crosses Denard and takes the ball he runs right into the slant. That leaves Denard wide open with the counter and he usually just has to beat one guy. We don't run many reverses or counters to the RB because we don't want the defense staying home. We want them to slant toward where the RB is going because that's when Denard is most effective.
I am liking this influx of posters. Thank you for all the input guys.
Could be an Edwin Baker - Leveon Bell scenario. Baker left early even after a shaky year because he knew that in his senior year, Bell would take all of his carries. Could be the same with Fitz and Rawls
I'm going to be the Debbie Downer here and say that people are taking way to much out of four carries in mop up duty. He broke two tackles by the same guy: Purdue's backup free safety.
And perhaps there were some gaps I didn't see while I watched this game the first time, but Fitz didn't get a lot of room.
For me, it isn't only about the Purdue game. It is the little bit in the UMass game, and what he showed in the spring game.
I have seen little to nothing from Fitz this year. Time to give Rawls some drives with the first team.
yea unless he really turns it on and kills it the rest of the season he would be a late round pick at best.
I'm definitely not against Rawls getting more PT. He has earned it.
But I'm not getting my hopes up that his results would be better than Fitz's.
We need to use both, their is nothing illegal about using 2 running backs. Both their styles compliment each other very nicely. Im hoping Rawls gets alot more playing time starting next week, he could be really good and I think it will open things up for Toussiant as he seems to be really pressing it this year. Offensive line to me is getting way to much blame, we ran for 304 yards against Purdue and 161 against Notre Dame they must be doing something right. Coaches need to get our other backs involved.
We need to start using more of both. Denard is running way too much.
No doubt Fitz prolly hasn't gotten the biggest holes to run through this season, but the potential of seeing Rawls truck defenders has be excited!!
I'm also begging for Norfleet to get some touches, even on little swing passes. Dude will be FILTHY if he gets into space
I agree. I wouldn't mind seeing a couple screens thrown his way.
thats what I've been thinkin since the 2nd game. He's so fast and elusive that he could be a terror if we get the ball to him in space.
I agree with this as well, this kid is way too talented to be relegated to just special teams duty even as a freshman. He is ready for more playing time love this dude's confidence, think he could be big time down the road if Fred ever gives him a chance to show his stuff at running back.
Darren Sproles 2.0.
I think they are saving him for sparty. they probably don't want sparty to get film on him. we're going to surprise them. they wont know what hit them.
My issue is Fitz waiting too long, and Hoke even said it in his press conference. When you have backs like Fitz you don't need a big hole, just a seam, hit it hard and fast and get 3-4 yrds. just like a QB checking down and taking what the D gives him. I would take 3 yrd gain anyday rather then a loss of 1. Besides that Fitz doesnt seem to be punishing defenders. I don't know how many times he has stopped right before he gets hit. I would rather see him take the fight to them rather then vise versa
You can't just put him in there for screen/swing passes coaches will see that right away and key on him. He probably isn't strong enough for pass blocking yet and that is why he isn't getting more touches.
The problem with Rawls is that he doesn't seem to be a shotgun running back. His best running is getting the ball moving downhill and building momentum rather than going East-West to get the ball and then changing direction to cut upfield. His best running doesn't mesh with what Denard does best, so do we want to put Denard in the I-formation which had everyone screaming, or have Rawls lose all his momentum trying to take handoffs in the read-option style?
Fitz hasn't been playing well, so I'm all for giving other people snaps, but Rawls success against Purdue was with Bellomy under center and a fullback (Kerridge) plowing through the hole first.
Agreed. Right now, his pass-blocking ability is one of the only reasons Vincent Smith sees the field, because he sure as hell can't do much offensively. I'm hoping Norfleet takes the Vincent Smith model and dedicates himself to pass-blocking so that we can actually have a change-of-pace back who can do some offensive damage.
At least Rawls gives me hope for the future, since we're never going to run a shotgun spread after Denard leaves.
Totally agree on that. I think Rawls could be pretty good next season, just not sure how well his strengths fit in this year with the way we need to run our offense.
