I think the D would have killed him eventually in all honesty. Scott Shafer is now Syracuse head coach and wouldn't be if he hadn't done a solid job at Syracuse (and he has, their D looks very solid for a Big East outfit). But as we all know Shafer butted heads with some of RR's boys so he's gone. Next coordinator hire is vital and he goes with Gerg, the bust of all busts as far as coaching hires go. That issue - cronyism, driving Shafer out, getting Gerg - sank him. Even if he does much better at offense, results would probably not have been at the level we expected by year 4 because of the D.
Going with Casteel at Zona saved him from himself. Casteel's Ds won't be awesome but they will be good enough to be better in the Pac than his teams were in the Big Ten.

I absolutely would trade Denard for that era. As much fun as Denard was to watch, the truly amazing this about Bo -> Moeller -> Carr is that the program NEVER fell off. It never had a losing season. That is unbelievable in this era. For that alone, I would give up the excitement of Denard for that.
