Wow didn't see that coming at all
We have a 5'7 RB playing CB. Color me confused.
Hoke says that Norfleet loves it and is embracing it very well. But still. We have depth at CB. I just don't see how much impact a 5'7 RB will have. Hopefully I'm wrong.
He'll still return punts and kicks. Hopefully he can also play some offense on reverses or jet sweeps.
I didn't either.
(It's sort of like our coaches recruiting Boyd to be a safety when he seems to be a better fit on offense as a WR.)
Frankly, I was a little annoyed that our coaches didn't use Norfleet as a slot WR in our offense.
I felt that our offense would've been much harder to defend if Garder was at QB, Denard was at RB, and Norfleet was in the slot.

If I recall, Norfleet was a very good CB coming out of HS in addition to being a very good RB. Hopefully he will still get some touches here and there on offense. Size is certainly in issue, but he will add speed and playmaking ability in the secondary.
This kind of reminds me of Teric Jones, no?
I guess they are not happy with him at RB, and think he can be a player elsewhere. I guess I am all for that, but still, color me confused.
I see R. Taylor moving to safety. And maybe that's why they moved Norfleet to CB?
Why would Taylor move to S when he played very well at CB?
Yeah, this doesn't make much sense. We have good depth at corner, and the potential starters next year will be very young. This seems like a waste. We could have used him the same way that we used Denard against Iowa. I doubt he will ever see meaningful playing time on defense. Hopefully I am wrong.
Kid's a crazy competitor. He has the perfect attitude for the position.
Plus he looks pretty good in coverage in some of 7-on-7 tape.
We have good depth at safety too: Gordon, Robinson, Furman, Wilson, Thomas, etc....
Meh, good potential depth. Robinson and Furman haven't proven to be consistent, Wilson and Thomas have loads of potential but haven't proven anything.
Norfleet could help with depth at Nickel CB where we have Avery and Hollowell (sp?).
Maybe I'm reaching here but maybe the coaches know something we don't. Maybe Green is a lock to Michigan and the coaches know that and Norfleet would still be buried at RB behind him and Smith plus are other RB"s. As far as playing WR he would of worked great in the old system but in no way shape or form do I think the coaches want a 5'7 slot guy. Yes I know he's giving up a lot of height on the outside but he could be a blanket in coverage and if he can jump out of the gym that will make it easier for him to defend. I trust Greg that he knows what he's doing with his D
He would have been a great replacement for Vincent Smith as a third down back. That's his ideal placement. Hopefully this means Justice Hayes has stepped up and can contribute there.
That or Drake is looking solid.
I liked what I saw out of Justice in his limited reps this year.
True, nickel CB seems plausible to me. We could definitely utilize his quickness to cover slot receivers. Not sure exactly where Hollowell plays right now, but Ross Douglas is also slated for the nickel spot, correct?
Funny you mention that:
Kyle Meinke @kmeinke
Hoke, on young players who have stood out in bowl practices: Kalis, Braden, Bars, Magnuson, Drake Johnson, Jenkins-Stone, Pipkins, Strobel
I believe so, hopefully Douglas can redshirt though.
I thought this as well. No way did I see Norfleet being an every down back but thought he could be a match up nightmare on 3rd downs coming out of the backfield to catch some passes.
It's good to see so many of the young OL guys being mentioned.
Love that he mentioned the OL. We might need three of them to start if Lewan leaves. That way Schofield could move to guard.
Also, Strobel has an opportunity to press for the SDE job.
It is all the scholarship oline recruits from 2012. Veryy nice.
I remember Steve Wiltfong hyping up Norfleet because he would make plays on offense in 7on7 and then turn around and lock down a WR on defense. Always competing and wanting to be on the field.
Yes Strobel is a BEAST!!
Taylor has bulked up a lot sense being UM. Besides it was just a thought.
Ok with it for a slot CB and nothing more than that.
