It doesn't have to be a defensive line coach, but to me it has to be young, ace recruiter, and an African American coach.
I wouldn't be surprised if they hired from within.

I wouldn't mind seeing someone like Tyrone Wheatley in some offensive capacity, but mostly used as a recruiting coordinator.
A QB coach wouldn't be bad either.
Wheatley would be nice, but there is no way he comes to UM to be anything less than a OC or HC. He is already a RB coach in the NFL with the Bills.
I'd love to get Wheatley, but don't see a chance he bolts a newly minted NFL job to be essentially a recruiting coordinator.
One thing I believe for certain is they'll need to hire somebody who isn't an old white dude given the profile of the other coaches and having something like that potentially used against them in recruiting. Otherwise I'd say they should go all-in for Mike Trgovac and see if he had any interest at all in taking over the DL and potentially being a DC candidate in a few years when Mattison retires.
Trgovac would be a great hire.
How about someone to help with WRs and TEs!
Edit: One other thought ... with the new NCAA rules everyone will be hiring full-time recruiting staff separate from coaching staff (Bama has already started). Maybe Ferrigno or Heck would want to do that, leaving a opening for Soup on offense. That still would leave a opening on the defensive side to replace Montgomery.

But I see your point about having a young minority coach. Mike Hart???
That's a great idea, if he would take it.
Jeff Phelps is another good choice and went to Crete Monee

And same alma mater as Hoke, Ball State.
He has a slight history of Dline coaching.
The biggest splash hire for DL would definitely be Lupoi, but that's not gonna happen. If we really want a LB/DL coach, then our options are a little slimmer. No way Larry Johnson leaves PSU, but he's an awesome coach.
Roy Manning makes all the sense in the world.
I would be like Jerry who, if we got Lupoi.
I wish we would go with one of our former players, preferably one during our national championship era. Hoke was there and he'd be comfortable with that player. Larry Foote or a Dhani Jones or someone like that would be a great hire IMO
That'd be a pretty solid hire. Pretty sure he coaches RBs now at NIU or something.
Dhani Jones doesn't coach.
I'll throw Cato June into the mix, too, he's a big time HS football coach now
Supposedly, Wheatley isn't interested in becoming an offensive coordinator. He would like to work his way up to a head coaching position in a fashion similar to the way that Hoke did (positions coach and assistant head coach, then a head coach at a smaller school).
Agree with this. Michigan ties, has worked with the staff, strong local ties for recruiting.
Sam Webb continuing to hint that he "wouldn't be surprised at all" if the coach was a LB coach also points this way. Manning played LB at Michigan, and he'd likely jump at the chance to be a SAM/OLB coach under Mattison.
Move Larry Smith to DL. Move Curt Mallory to LB. Hire Charles Woodson to coach the Secondary.
Hire Da'Shawn Hand's coach
Are you a big Woodson fan?
Charles Woodson ... woohoo!!!
Basically how Huge Freeze got his start in college football
