Didn't hurt to check, but interesting nonetheless.
When news broke shortly after the BCS title game that Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly was interviewing with the Philadelphia Eagles, Michigan defensive coordinator Greg Mattison took a little trip to Indiana. He wanted Ft. Wayne Bishop Luers linebacker and Notre Dame commitment Jaylon Smith to know he had options.
Nice. Still think he is the best player in the country.
I wish his brother would flip him to a Buckeye
Smart move on Mattison's part. I still never really understood why Smith eliminated us so early.
He is such a good player
At the Adidas Max Exposure camp last spring, we watched him go one-on-one with Jourdan Lewis. Lewis juked to the side and beat Smith initially. Somehow, and I still remember it vividly, Smith was able to recover and almost made the play. The fact that he was even in the remote area of the ball after Lewis's initial move was unbelievable.
Absolutely agree that he's one of the two or three best players in the entire class.
It was because his brother is at OSU, right? didn't want to have an interfamily rivalry iirc
No I think ND sucked when we got Rod Smith and Jaylon would rather stay home and when you look at depth charts like his brother told him .and he prob made the right choice although I think he is good enough to start at OSU or mich
This is true and was widely reported. That ruled out Michigan. It was also reported that academics were important. That ruled out Ohio. Game Notre Dame.
Widely speculated and Ohio St is a good Academic school so I'm not buying that. If Acadmics were so important why wasn't Northwestern on his list. ND,Oh St and Mich are all quality schools so did Jaylon say this directly ?
ohio is a good academic school.....
"Those Who Stay...Will be Champions"
That's only speculation.
I think folks should really pay attn to this, especially the fans that were criticizing the coaches for not pursuing elite prospects late in the cycle. This just goes to illustrate that everything that occurs behind the scenes is not reported. The coaches, as seen with smith, were likely contacting other elite players, possibly elite WRs, but if there is no interest the folks at 247, scout, rivals, etc will never hear about it.
Ohio's academics are MAC-level.
Most likely because they are in the MAC
laying in the weeds
Gotta love Mattison and the recruiting staff in general for the job they're doing. We have one extra spot and crazy stuff goes down at this time of year. Why not whisper in Smith's ear. I wonder if the subject of coaching stability was brought up? Hmmmn.....
Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits. -- Mark Twain
Coaching stability is just fine at ND. Kelly has already said that his meetings with the Eagles were to see what the NFLwas all about. He didn't like what he saw, and said college is where he will stay. Also, working on raises across the board for all asst coaches.
3 time POTW
Just like Chip Kelly was just "checking things out" the last couple years... you honestly don't believe that, do you?
Actually, yes. He's been coaching in college for 20+ years. He enjoys developing these kids into men. I really don't see him coaching NFL players. He likes the control he has.
He couldnt handle the NFL anyways, just like that cheerleader couldnt handle alot of things.
When ya get curb-stomped like ND did, I imagine he wont leave till he avenges that debacle. Ergo, he isn't going anywhere
