The man is more important than the brand. Look at Bama without Saban. Or USC with Kiffen. Or Michigan with RR. ND for the last 20 years. You can have a great brand and a lousy coach and the brand wont make up for it. On the other hand you can have a great coach at an unknown brand and do well. Look at Boise or Meyer at Utah.
It's both. Brady Hoke couldn't have recruited Derrick Green or probably any of the rest of this class to SDSU; Rich Rodriguez probably couldn't have recruited Derrick Green or much of the rest of this class to Michigan. I don't think one is more important than the other, they're both necessary conditions if you want to recruit at the highest level and compete for national championships. I'm just glad we seem to have the right guy in place to go with our brand now.
As an aside: A lot of people itt burying USC's class.. I get it, I've done it myself, but I think we should keep in mind that the Trojans still have an impressive class. It's not a class for the ages like it looked like a couple months ago, but a consensus top-10 class (#7 to Rivals, #10 to Scout, #8 to ESPN, and #6 to 247) with multiple consensus 5-stars is nothing to sneeze at.
