...the ku bigs hedge HARD on ball screens out at mid court. Withey, who does not have very quick feet, is susceptible to getting some blocking fouls if the guard can attack his top shoulder. He also has a tendency to set moving screens out on the perimeter and if Michigan guards do not go around these illegal screens, they can get some cheap calls against him. Big 12 refs seem to overlook a lot of these calls, especially in the friendly confines of allen field house. If he can get 2 fouls out on the perimeter early in the first half, the entire complexion of the game will change. He RARELY gets called for any fouls down in the post. 1, because he is a great shot blocker, and 2 because of his reputation as a shot blocker.
If McLemore is struggling in the first half, look for Bill Self to run something early, as in the first play out of the half, to get him going. An alley oop, a back door, something, but it is going to Ben McLemore. Count on it. That is textbook Bill Self.
Take it for what its worth and nothing more. I think you'll find the info helpful and insightful. Best of luck Friday night.
I agree. We need to get him out of his comfort zone. If we can somehow neutralize Withey (pick and rolls and DON'T give him the chance to get the ball easily in the post), we have a good shot. If we allow him to dominate the boards and the paint, we won't win.
If there's anyone that can get him in foul trouble for hedging on screens, it's Trey. I have confidence in his ability to keep the game at a pace he wants it to be at.
I say run him until he can't run anymore. He jogs up the court. McGary can get some transition baskets on him for sure. I want Withey covering screens, pick and rolls, transition, everything on defense. We sub and body and bang him because he's all thru got for constant inside presence. McClemore has been struggling so we don't need him to have his breakout game.
