"Those Who Stay...Will be Champions"
I like it better when the media hates us.
Me too. It's the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw this. Let's hope the team doesn't see it.
So do I.
If people actually think that our flaws have suddenly been fixed after two games, then they are delusional. Don't get me wrong, the last two games were great. But we played two teams that just so happened to be perfect match-ups for us. VCU's style of play fell right into our strengths. We have the best turnover ratio in all of college basketball, and we are an extremely athletic team that will make you pay if you press us. Likewise, South Dakota State has a horrible defense and doesn't rebound the basketball very well. I would have been shocked had we lost to either of those teams.
Kansas, on the other hand, plays the kind of style of basketball that we struggled with all throughout the Big Ten season. This team is very similar to OSU and MSU. They are a tough, defensive-minded team that rebounds the ball effectively. This game is going to quickly remind us of our weaknesses (rebounding, defense, generating good shots in half-court offense against good defensive teams, etc...). I'm not saying that we are going to lose, as we split our season series with both OSU and MSU, but it is going to be a struggle.
Well one of our big flaws was our play at center. Morgan was really struggling. McGary has been great in the last 2 games. This is something you can't discount. Doesn't mean he will be great the rest of the tourney but if he has finally figured things out and can give us 30 minutes of consistent play then that is a huge upgrade to this team even from early in the season when we were playing well. When McGary plays like he has in the tourney we are a much better rebounding team. He is capable of double doubles every game.
I think Sparty should be a #1 ove the Buckeyes
Right, my concern is that McGary's production the last two games is more a product of who we were playing against (bad rebounding teams with hardly any presence inside) than a major improvement in McGary's game. When was the last time McGary played against a team that basically lacked any semblance of an inside presence? I think this has a lot to do with his production so far in the tourney. For instance, I don't really remember McGary doing much against Wisconsin (just three games ago). Kansas will be a huge test. If he can do it against Kansas, then I will be a believer. First things first, he needs to stay out of foul trouble, which will be extremely difficult.
McGary didn't dominate the competition early in the year when we were playing the bad teams. He had a very solid 3 game stretch in the middle of the year against Indiana, Wisconsin and Ohio State where he averaged 13 pts and 7 boards. McGary was really out of shape early on and couldn't play long stretches without getting winded. That has changed and I have noticed a significant improvement in his game. He can now give us 30 minutes.
As you pointed out, we split with both MSU and OSU and three of the four games were very close. No one has said all of our flaws are fixed. But every team is flawed, including KU. FWIW MSU beat KU fairly easily early in the regular season, when MSU wasn't playing very well. KU is not some unstoppable juggernaut. They are a very good albeit flawed team, just like we are. Whether we win or lose, I expect this to be a close game.
I wouldn't completely agree with the "perfect matchup" argument, but I do agree generally with these comments. Michigan still has some big flaws that are going to be on display when they have to play a pretty big team like Kansas. However, there's no doubt that McGary is starting to come into his own, especially at the offensive end, and that the less physical tournament play is really helping Michigan.

since OSU beat Sparty 2 out of 3 this year, I'd have to go with the way it is...
side note, how could Sparty be a 2 seed and Duke be a 2 seed when they are in the same bracket?
Hate to say it- but I agree here.
Neither team we've played so far has had a guy over like 6'8. Its the big teams that can defend, rebound & score in the paint, that give us the most trouble. Kansas will be a insanely tough matchup on Friday.
Hopefully Mitch can stay out of early foul trouble, and our outside shooting is on point. Would love to see Canadian Bacon get his shot back immediately.
Really hope we can get it done. But reseeding us as a #1 is borderline insane IYAM.
I would've had us as a 2 seed.

I think the foul situation is going to be a huge factor. If McGary can keep from fouling the point guard thirty feet from the basket like he has a bad habit of doing I think this will be a close game that we can win.
If not we could be in big trouble. Morgan and Horford just don't play with the kind of intensity and physicality that we are going to need going forward in the tournament.
Beilein should put the tape on of the last two games and make Morgan and Horford watch it. Then tell them if you can't bring the type of energy and tenacity you see out of McGary you are going to continue to sit on the bench right next to me. jmo
Why? We have more consecutive games (road win @ IU) and 2 out of 3 matchups that includes us eliminating them from the B1G tourney.
On the this nine game streak, Sparty has given us two W's.

The rankings listed are solely based off of the tourney. MSU easily took care of their two opponents, while OSU struggled with one of theirs. This rankings don't really matter, though. It's March Madness, just survive and advance.
