Did Gardner get his redshirt? ..and do you think he will be a Heisman candidate this year?
AFAIK, 1) not yet and 2) no.
There really aren't alot of good QB's out there.. If he can play more consistent and get a good running game going I think he will play well.
Possibly to the Heisman candidate thing. It's not totally out of the question.
I can promise you there will be a thread on this board when he does in fact get that redshirt.
And it's always possible that he could be a candidate, but he'd need everything to go right. He has the advantage of playing for a big name school, but he'd have to win a lot of games and play really well (obviously)
I just think he needs to develop as a passer. The kid is a phenomenal athlete in the mold of a Vince Young. He showed last year that he can make incredible plays. Now he just needs to become more consistent as a passer, make better decisions and get the ball out on time.
There has been crazier things happen as far as a Heisman candidate- Johnny Manziel was a freshman who was battling for the job in camp. So I definitely think its possible with Devin, but the supporting cast just has to help out like Texas A&M did for Manziel.
exactly Clint! I thought Devin showed flashes of greatness. He was put in a difficult spot by being the 3rd sting QB for half of the year, when he actually showed to be a WAY better option then anyone on the team. I see Devin getting better by leaps and bounds with a whole off-season as the starter.
Our offense won't allow Gardner to be Heisman. Much like AJ Mccarron and Alabama. Mccarron is a really good QB, but he isn't the focal point of the offense and he won't/can't put up the stats needed to be in the Heisman discussion.
I think Gardner will be in the Heisman discussion going into The 2013 Game.
And I think Al Borges will configure the offense (via the pistol formation) to take advantage of Gardner's strengths. However, Gardner needs to improve his accuracy.

Well i disagree with this completely. Devin will get to throw the ball 25+ times a game. He will get opportunities inside the red zone to score rushing TDs. He has the ability to make the highlight type plays with his legs. He put up 18 TDs in 5 games starting last year. If he keeps that type of pace up he would have over 40 TDs and if you combine that with enough wins and that alone could put him in the heisman discussion.
Couldn't have said it better.
Having Green near the goal line this year may steal some of those TDs that Gardner scored this last year.
Bridgewater, Hogan, Boyd, JFB, Hudley and Maroita? Not to mention guy’s like Casey Paschall, David Fales, and Blake Bell could have big years and burst onto the scene. 2013 should be a great year for QB play.
Ok.. i see your point, but you don't think Devin Gardner is among that group? He is on the same level as Hudley, Bell and Paschall for sure! ..and with an entire off season as a QB, he is on the same level as Bridgewater, Miller and Johnny Football imo.
Maybe Bell, but no not yet. DG was very impressive last year after moving from WR, but he’s not among the best in CFB yet. Hudley’s getting some 2014 NFL Draft buzz, and Paschall was very good before getting suspended.
Maybe 2014, but not yet.
