FWIW, I saw an article on McGary at MLive about a week ago saying that if he could hit 7/10 from 3pt range in practice (which he said he had), Beilein would give him the freedom to shoot it from deep in a game. McGary said he didn't want to try it out though, considering the only game left was the NC .
I think he plays the 5 best on the court with exceptions for some match ups like VCU. So I'd expect to see Irvin start eventually.
If we want a 4 that can shoot threes, Beilein should start Donnal. That won't happen though, at least not until late in the season if Donnal outplays his first year expectation.
That's the beauty of having a player like Mark Donnal. When he's on the floor, we can seamlessly go from a 3out/2in to a 4out/1in (and vice versa) without player substitutions.
Hence, I think Coach Beilein will play 2 bigs at the same time. The advantages are simply too big to ignore. For instance, we could become really good at high/low passing.
I fully expect to see the following combinations next year:
Donnal/McGary (the most obvious combo)
Donna/Morgan (if he stays)
There are also some other combinations possible such as Horford/McGary, Horford/Morgan, and Morgan/McGary but I think we'll see these be used sparingly.

I was thinking there's a good chance Donnal redshirts if everyone stays.
I think that's possible but the coaches might decide Donnal's ability to stretch the 4 with his perimter shooting is a big plus and then burn his redshirt early in the season (like they did with Caris Levert).
I honestly don't think Donnal will redshirt. I think from a talent stand point he is better than Morgan and Horford.
Sorry but Donnal > Morgan
He is a baller. No way he redshirts.
Thanks Frank. I have been waiting for this.
Frank how would you grade out Donnal on his rebounding?
I can't say for sure based off of just highlights but I get the impression that he would be very good at offensive rebounding.
What I love most about Donnal is that he is clearly skilled in the post. He's often getting double and triple teamed (albeit by smaller players) but he still finds a way to put the ball in the basket.
This is something that Morgan and Horford cannot do consistently.
Love that he can thug it up in the post and then go out to the perimeter and nail some 3s. Smot could hit 3s but he didn't like to get physical in the post. Donnal doesn't seem to have a problem with that.
If Donnal can come in and add 10-15 pounds of muscle before the season, I don't think he redshirts.
And given our strength programs' recent track record of adding weight to incoming freshmen, I think he should be able to throw on those 10-15 pounds without much of a problem.
Yeah I absolutely love Donnal's offensive game. Absolutely agree that he seems more eager and willing to mix it up physically down low than Smot was. Hopefully, this will translate to him being a pretty good post defender and rebounder next year.
That's exactly what I thought when I saw it.
Yeah... she's definitely giving him the WTF look.
Zak Irvin is now a 5 star on Rivals.
4 Michigan freshmen make ESPN's Top 25 Freshmen list.
John Gasaway provides his final ranking of the top 25 freshmen in the nation, based purely on performance at the college level.
Maybe you should offer to trade him one of your cousins for his. If you don't have a cousin I'd be glad to loan you one of mine...of course they all look like Lewan in drag.
I know it is way to early to get excited about 2013-14 basketball but when you add ALL the returning freshmen with the two upperclassmen big guys and the incoming freshmen it makes for a pretty damn good team. I'll make one minor prediction...Levert shows up with about 15 more pounds of muscle and surprises everybody in a VERY good way.
I hope we return all the freshman. Beilein doesn't recruit or coach towards this amount of early departures.
On Scout he's ranked the #12 SF (a 4 star).
A lower ranking will look better for Michigan/Coach Beilein if he ends up being a 1st rounder of a lottery pick.
If both freshman come back we will be a damn good team again.
iMHO he starts , skilled post player with a J . Move GR3 down his natural pos 3 . Walton Irvin GR donal Mcgary
