Per UMhoops Levert has become Michigan's 5th commmit for the 2012 basketball class. Nice pickup for Coach B.
Welcome to Michigan Caris!
That's good news. I wonder if Levert will be able to push for minutes from the get go.

How good is this kid?
"Those Who Stay...Will be Champions"
Solid. I saw him play one game this year. Smooth, nice jump shooter. He might need a year to get really into rhythm, but he is another one of those guys that you could see exploding.
I think a lot of that could depend on how well Vogrich plays. There are minutes available for someone to grab.
Here's what long time Ohio scout Kurt Stubbs has to say about Levert's game:
Levert (6’4.5) is a silky smooth combo guard. Levert is an absolute killer on the offensive end using a series of dribble drive mid and long range pull ups off his signature deadly crossover. Can score in bunches! Has tremendous length and deceiving strength which allows him to score over almost all high school defenders. He was at his best against the best competition in the state en route to the D1 state title. He is comfortable attacking the basket as well and his athleticism is more than serviceable around the rim. Capable of playing the point if need be. Decent defender as his length makes up for any lack of lateral movement. Kid just has the feel of a late bloomer who could one day be a pro.

Per Brian Cook at MGoBlog, JHuddle (longtime Ohio HS sports blog) named Levert their player of the year for 2012. And that puts him in some pretty good company:
2012: Caris Levert
2011: Trey Burke
2010: Jared Sullinger
2009: Jared Sullinger
2008: William Buford/B.J. Mullens
2007: Jon Diebler
May need a redshirt year, but he definitely has the potential to be a very good offensive threat.
I think he will get a redshirt because he needs to add some muscle on his frame, but also because we have a nice amount of depth at the guard spots already. I assume Spike is going to see minutes at the 1 so he can at least get some experience and compete with Walton. Others disagree, but I think THJr sees most of his minutes at SG this year so he can be on the court with GRIII at the 3. Then we also have Vogrich and Stauskus who will be looking for minutes at the 2. THJr could look at the NBA after his junior year and Vogrich graduates, so getting a RS Fr LeVert to compete with Stauskus would be good, especially since it is unclear if Austin Hatch will be ready to play.
When is the last time a player redshirted for non medical reasons? I can't think of any.
Max Bielfeldt last year?
I believe you are right.
I think a lot of this depends on whether or not Coach B decides to go with 2 big men on the court at the same time. If he sticks with the smaller lineup then that means GRIII will play the 4. This would free up either the 2 or the 3 for Vogrich, Stauskas or Levert to start and then the other 2 as backups. Levert has a nice offensive game and I think with his length and athleticism he could easily be a better defensive player than Vogrich next year. Vogrich is going to have to play better and definetly shoot better than 30% from 3pt land if he wants to get his minutes next year.
Oh and for 2013 don't forget we still have Irvin coming in who will play the 2 or 3 as well.
That's some solid praise right there.
Lol. Well his argument got shot down quickly.
yeah that one didn't work out so well for me. Still, it virtually never happens in basketball.
Vogrich isn't much more then just a warm body out there. Unless he improves I don't think it would take much to steal his minutes.
Agree it is rare, but Beilein does seem A bit more common for these last minute additions. I think Beilein redshirted McLimans too without injury (and Cronin, but that very well could have been injury related), though they likely aren't thinking 5th year for him where it would matter anyway.
Yep it's rare. McLimans was a non injury redshirt i believe. I am pretty certain Cronin's was injury related. I know Jordan Morgan was redshirted as well and i don't think it was injury related. It could of been but if it was it didn't keep him from working out hard because he transformed his body during that redshirt year.
