All-Big Ten Team Thoughts

  • Of course, most are still thinking about yesterday's game between Michigan and Indiana, but the Big Ten will officially announce the All-Big Ten teams today. Most eyes will be on the Player of the Year race, but the All-Big Ten team will be named and the All-Big Ten Freshman team will named as well. This has been a long season and with the depth of the Big Ten it's certainly going to be a tough debate, but if I had a vote this year, here is who would be selected:

-BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE YEAR:
    -Trey Burke, Michigan

-BIG TEN COACH OF THE YEAR:
    -Bo Ryan, Wisconsin

-BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR:
    -Gary Harris, Michigan State

    -ALL-BIG TEN 1ST TEAM:
    -Trey Burke, Michigan
    -Victor Oladipo, Indiana
    -Cody Zeller, Indiana
    -Deshaun Thomas, Ohio State
    -Brandon Paul, Illinois

    -ALL-BIG TEN 2ND TEAM:
    -Aaron Craft, Ohio State
    -Gary Harris, Michigan State
    -Adreian Payne, Michigan State
    -Tim Hardaway, Jr., Michigan
    -Trevor Mbakwe, Minnesota

    -ALL-BIG TEN FRESHMAN TEAM:
    -Gary Harris, Michigan State
    -Glenn Robinson III, Michigan
    -Yogi Ferrell, Indiana
    -A.J. Hammons, Purdue
    -Sam Dekker, Wisconsin

Just a few notes on these selections. First, Player of he Year. Trey Burke was selected over Victor Oladipo primarily due to consistency. Oladipo was obviously on the winning side on Sunday, but Burke has been great all year. Oladipo has the highlights, but Burke has been the guy who is there every game and has scored at least 15 points in every Big Ten game. Even the Big Ten's scoring leader, Deshaun Thomas can't match that. And when you add in his 6.8 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game, he really takes the game to a different level. Oladipo is an outstanding player, but if you wanted to start a team from scratch, the player you would want is Burke not Oladipo. It seems likely Oladipo will win, largely due to the media pushing his bid, but Burke has been the better player.

For Coach of the Year, Bo Ryan was selected. The popular choices will be Crean, but Ryan took a team that appeared in question for the NCAA Tournament and nearly won them a Big Ten title. For Freshman of the Year, Gary Harris deserved to be selected. He has been outstanding and really has improved his play from being an outside shooter to a a great all around player. He plays defense, can drive the basket, and of course, can hit some 3 point shots.

The top four choices for All-Big Ten were pretty easy and it seems likely that over 90% of the ballots this year will have those four players. However, the last pick was difficult. Payne, Craft, Paul, and Mbakwe would have all been solid choices and it will be interesting to see who actually makes the list. It's like splitting hairs, but ultimately I selected Brandon Paul. His numbers are great and Illinois has been able to secure some massive wins this season including the thriller against Indiana.

The second team was probably just as easy to fill. Mbakwe, Craft, and Payne were virtual locks, especially if they aren't listed them as a 1st team player. Gary Harris has also put together an outstanding season, but his numbers typically aren't good enough to warrant a 1st team selection. If he returns, he will likely be on everyone's preseason All-Big Ten team. Hardaway was also selected for the 2nd team. Michigan fans get frustrated with Hardaway at times, but his production is probably a lot better than people give him credit for and he has done a lot to propel Michigan to its 25-6 record.

The All-Big Ten Freshman team was a lot harder to select. There's no doubt Gary Harris was going to be listed. He's been the best freshman in the Big Ten for much of the year. GR3 may not have the numbers of some other players, but he plays great defense and can rebound the ball. Yogi Ferrell is often overlooked due to the talent surrounding him, but he's been a solid point guard on one of the nation's best teams. A.J. Hammons may be a player that gets overlooked by many, but he's improved significantly this year and is going to be one of the conference's best big men next season for the Boilermakers. Finally, Dekker has put together a solid year. Not good enough for comparison with players like Harris, especially due to his limited minutes, but he has been a good contributor to the Badgers.

It's been a great year for the Big Ten. There's still plenty to look forward to with the conference and NCAA Tournament ahead, but it seems pretty clear that a lot of the same names are going to be appearing on the national awards radar. In fact, the player who wins the Big Ten Player of the Year is probably going to be the guy who ends up with the Wooden award.

  • Very good list. I would include Jared B from Wisconsin over Mbakwe though if I were making the list. I'd argue that Mbakwe, while having an impressive year, didn't take over games for a team that performed below expectations. While nobody jumps out at Wisconsin, I'd still rather have Jared B over Mbakwe.

If God dwells inside us, like some people say, I sure hope He likes enchiladas, because that's what He's getting

  • I agree with almost everything except I'd take Craft over Paul on 1st team (especially considering Zeller and Thomas are weak on D).

  • Chris Balas is saying that he is hearing that Burke will be awarded the Big Ten player of the year award tonight.

  • Chris Balas said Keita Bates-Diop would commit to Michigan too. lol

Hopefully he is right this time though

  • shrug was the Diop thing a prediction? He isn't predicting Burke to win. He says he has sources telling him Burke has won it.

  • I don't know. I just remember that I blamed Balas for being wrong lol. Fingers crossed, I really hope Burke wins.

  • Just don't blame me if Balas is wrong on this one. lol

  • I think this 5 can take any 5 in the country. this is a scary team; too much offense. If craft was on this team, craft burke and oladipo will shut down everyone on defense.
