The B1G can not oversign, teams are only allowed as many scholarships as they have open as their hard cap. 3 can be back-dated to the previous class if there is room. I think what Brady 6 is saying is that teams cut Jr's who aren't very good. But this is also not true. It is perfectly acceptable to deny a 5th year Sr a Scholarship, but at that point the school is not to blame.
This is Michigan, fergodsakes.
There is no way around it unless they take grey shirts. Now which player on their commit list do you think would be willing to take a greyshirt? Doesn't matter if they pull scholarships from some senior, 18 is the max they can take and Redd is the only exception as he doesn't count against them this year.
Every school oversigns, at least the major ones. Michigan will oversign this year. The question is how much they oversign and how they get under the number in the end. The shady practices are the teams that offer last minute greyshirts or just plain pull schollies.
That's not true anymore.. Sounds like they're getting two more kids in this class. One isn't hard to figure out the other I have no idea..
Who would that be.....who are the 2 players most likely in consideration, and the rest of their targets???
That would mean pulling a schollie or someone not qualifying. There isn't any way around the 18 outside the whole Redd thing.
That is my understanding. How is it possible for them to get around this?
Pay them to walk-on
Greyshirt or Straight Walkon is the only way. And with USC being a private school it's not like their tuition is cheap. Id be shocked if a top kid wanted to pay $30k for a year while other kids got a full ride.
Kiffin is sneaky he has stated all along that he wasnt going to talk about the scholarship numbers and he has been asked several times.
Anybody know why Jake Butt dropped in the rankings
I agree he's sneaky, but the NCAA sanctions are black-and-white. And the other Pac12 schools aren't going to sit back and watch USC take 20 kids completely ignoring the penalties they were given. If they can convince 2 kids to greyshirt, more power to them, but they can't go over 18 scholarships. Maybe they can find some kid with financial needs who has high grades and get them an academic scholarship, but that's really, really risky and might not even be allowed by the NCAA anymore.
They can't give kids an academic scholarship.
No idea. 247 has him criminally under-ranked though.
Just saw that. Wow, I would love to hear the reason as to why he dropped from a 247 evaluator. Ive been getting pretty disappointed in how they rank some recruits. For example Lewis, and Dawson. Butt a three star? Is this a joke? I love this message board but 247 rankings mean nothing to me. They have Jacob matuska ranked #7 TE and Butt #12. I saw matuska play, while he is a good ball player he's not even in the same ball park as Butt. He is a good blocker but that's really about it.

He isn't going to the SEC.
Until the B10 starts beating the snot out of the SEC on a regular basis, the B10 is seen as less viable than the SEC. AL game can start changing this perception. If we can get MSU, Wisconsin, and OSU to schedule SEC games, we can start to make a dent. MSU beating GA last year was awesome.

I'll take a 6'6 235 lb 3* tight end that plays both ways for his high school.
His composite is quite a bit higher than his score here.
I think there were hints about his athleticism at The Opening by the staff here.
Coby Fleener was a 3* and he was pretty successful.
What cracks me up is all Lewis and Butt did was ball out this summer. Every camp, and every site had great things to say about both these guys. So logically 247 thinks keep the same rankings or drop them a bit.
At the end of the day who cares, none of this is an exact science and these sites all have their biases they just won't ever admit it. Whether it's because a kid is more media friendly to them ie giving interviews and updates on their recruitment regularly(Yes, this matters a lot) or if they play in their respective region. That is why you have to look at the composite rankings(All sites) and offer lists. Better gauge of what type of prospect they are, but again none of this is an exact science.
Isn't Matuska going to play DE for ND? What a joke..
Ive heard that as well. I watched his team play Maty Mauk's team last year in the playoffs. I didn't know who Matuska was but he def stuck out. He was bigger then any of his teams Oline. It's not a surprise though considering he plays div 4 ball which is pretty dang small. Matuska dropped the game winning touchdown catch and they lost to Mauk's team. He really seemed awkward at trying to catch the ball, natural run blocker though. Not that it matters but Maty Mauk was very impressive. Not really a pro style guy but i would have taken him in a heart beat.
Butt has the biggest discrepancy in his rankings between 247 and the composite (among the top 300).... Almost 200 spots.... that's crazy.
He's better than that.
