Not as simple as you say imo.
Coaches have to stagger the depth and talent. Otherwise, it leads to attrition and we as Michigan fans know that can take a toll on a program.
Lastly, Toussaint likely won't be here when DeVeon Smith and Wyatt Shallman get to Ann Arbor for the 2013 season. But we will have 6 scholarship players at RB: Justice Hayes, Drake Johnson, Thomas Rawls, Dennis Norfleet, DeVeon Smith, and Wyatt Shallman. That should be enough for a season.
And to be clear, I'm ok with the the coaches taking a 3rd RB in this class but I haven't figured out the reason.
* * * N E O . R E T R O * * *
IIRC, it was reported in a VIP article here.
The 3rd RB spot was between Isaac and Green and both were told where they stood.
Again, if the coaches didn't really/truly care about taking a 3rd RB, they would not have pursued Isaac so heavily. That much is clear.
Moreover, when things started to change after Isaac's first visit to USC, they showed interest in Wilkins from Tennessee.
Those 3 pieces of info lead me to believe that the coaches were/are intent on taking a RB. Could things change in the future? Sure but as of now it's clear that the coaches wanted/want a 3rd RB.
I'm just not sure why.

Rawls. This is for 2013 so Smith graduated. In 2012 it seemed the coaches were talking up Rawls and Hayes.

They were always recruiting Wilkins. Even before Isaac committed.
I did not know that. Thank you for correcting me. I was under the impression that the coaches ramped up their interest in Wilkins after they suspected that Isaac might be attracted toward USC.
But given what you just posted, it's more evidence that the coaches want a 3rd running back.

The logic is: RB's have a high beta compared to other skill positions. A lot of them don't work out so you need a few each class in hopes that a great one bubbles to the top. I would think they would only burn one more spot on RB if it's someone with more upside than Smith. Isaac, Green and Wilkins all qualify. I hear that the pressure on recruiting all three hasn't let up despite Isaac getting all the press. Coaches can't say anything to anybody about recruiting so anything about their strategy is speculation. I somehow doubt they would ever compare one recruit with another in talking with the recruit. They would too easily burn a relationship built over years. Recruiting analysis is 99% guesswork.
I like McQuay. With McQuay and Thomas at safety then hoping to get Fuller for DB. We could have Fuller, Lewis, Conley in the back field as well. That would make it pretty dang hard to pass on us. Especially with what our D-Line is going to do to opposing QB's.
As far as Wilkens goes. A few times on his highlight film he reminded me of Walter Payton. Not the whole film but there were glimpses of Payton for me. I hope we land him. Green would be awesome to but I like Wilkens better.
Why 3 RB's? RB's are going to be used a ton in the near future. RB's in high school many times can play/switch positions at the next level because they are almost always the best athlete on the team. JMO. Besides it is just good logic to have a few back ups in case of injury or illness.
If we have 5 schollies left I would love to get Wilkens, Hurst, Agusta, McQuay, and Fuller. In any order with 6 I'd take Treadwell.

They're also going after an SDE. So that's a WR, 2DT, SDE, DB, and RB?
Thanks for the response.
I know that RBs can be hit or miss just like other skill positions on offense (QB/WR/TE) but I get the impression that we have a good stall of RBs/FBs right now so a 7th RB seems unnecessary if not redundant. I like our remaining 2013 RB targets but I like our 2014 RB options more. Hence, I'd rather that the coaches take 3 RBs in the 2013 class.
And while coaches may never compare players, the recruits are aware of one another. For instance, all our OLine recruits knew that it was a first come, first serve basis. Moreover, they knew that our coaches had offered many OLine recruits in the 2013 class. That may have partially contributed to the string of OL commitments so early in the process.
I was thinking Augusta could be a monster at SDE. I'm not sure about 2DT or who they'd be besides Hurst. Maybe Poggi but I think he needs to bulk up a lot. DB I think we are good at unless it is Fuller. RB we are also good at unless Wilkens or Green. WR well it seems like Treadwell is the fan favorite but not getting my hopes up. McQuay at safety may not be a need but he'd be great to have in the backfield.
I'd actually like to see us bank a few scholarships if we do not land some of these guys. Our class is down right awesome the way it is.
Yes I agree it seems like they have a lot of backs... but its better to try to close on one more this year than wait until next. Who knows what will happen next year.
My point about not comparing recruits was the idea that Green was told by coaches he's too much like Smith and they prefer Isaac. Not going to happen. Wouldn't make any sense. They recruit both and then they compete for the spot. Just like USC with their two new RBs.
They'll tell someone the spot is full as we know. Recruits will talk like Foster and Treadwell did with Ohio. And recruits know if a spot is filling up as you said.
Also the other good point is that RBs, like QBs, are often the top athletes and move easily more to other roles. Haven't seen that pan out though.

WR - Treadwell or they have Allen, Larue, Stringfellow and Daniels interested in visits
DT 1 - The only potential NT is Hurst. They told him he's a 3 tech. At least until PeeWee graduates.
DT 2 - Poggi, Augusta, Others - 3-tech
SDE - There are a few that they are still going after. Muhammad isn't in play for 9 months.
RB - I think it's Green or Wilkins or bust. Don't know if they would take Edwards at that point.
DB - They are going after McQuay, Foster, Cravens and a few others. It seems unlikely that they would take both a Safety and Corner but who knows. Seems like they really want another corner with the miss last year.
If they can't close on some key guys it could end up DT, SDE, WR, CB and one other best available.
According to Bama fans, Henry Poggi is a strong/heavy lean to Bama.
Perhaps the coaches feel the same way.
What do you mean?
I think if we do take 6 more, then either Lewan and/or Fitz are likely going pro early....no?
23 or 24. Who attrits is tough to predict.
Alquadin Muhammad From Don Bosco. Best SDE on the board. Favors Michigan, Rutgers and ND. Hasn't started the process yet. Is waiting until Fall.
Maybe so given the silence. Was supposed to have announced by now.
Pretty sure I just read today that the coaches are recruiting McQuay as a CB. Looks like the coaches really want another CB in this class.
SDE and 3-tech DT are fairly interchangeable in our defense. Depends on spots available but they might just take two DL and figure out later where they fit.
true they are recruiting several players that could be 3 tech DT or SDE but we also could use depth at the nose, i would really like to see us take an entre DL in this class, we have a WDE but could really use a NT, DT and SDE for depth, Imo we really need a NT in this class, after campbell leaves we really have nobody behind pipkins and that is defeinetly a position that needs to be rotated, the big man needs a solid backup that can give him a blow
