Campbell close to Michigan offer?

Detroit (Mich.) Jayru Campbell picked up two big offers this summer. He weighs in on Michigan and where they stand after attending a day of summer camp last week.

  • Would they go light in 14 and maybe offer the Country Day kid and then go after Campbell in 15?

  • I think Shane Morris was a special case where the coaches knew he was going to be a huge get and offered/accepted his committment so early in the process. With the coaches wanting a QB in each class (most likely) I can't see any 2015 kids getting offers (including Michael O'Connor) before we have a 2014 prospect on board. Not that a 2015 commit would scare off the 2014 kids, just that it is easy negative recruiting from other coaches to say "Look, they already identified and took a younger kid who they probably see replacing you on the depth chart."

Given the camp performance, I think the earliest 2015 outlook right now would be Campbell and Michael O'Connor (profile linked). Since most freshman QBs don't start on varsity in high school though, a ton more names will pop up in the next 2 years as more prospects actually get playing time and film becomes available.

  • I say we offer Stewart and hopefully he commits then offer Campbell. I don't want him getting away from us.

  • I say offer Kizer and Stewart, whoever commits first...and then focus on Campbell. One QB per class is ideal.

Stewart could be a special player, he is a prototypical pocket QB that is raw and can be coached up into something special. I would love to see the coaches take Stewart/Key and Kizer though.

  • That says a lot about Campbell as a leader that he was able to step in as a freshman and help lead a team with so much veteran talent to a state championship. I'm by no means saying he was the only reason they won, because their defense definitely carried them for much of the season. But that can be a nightmare situation for a freshman quarterback to step into, and he thrived in it.

I would agree, the sooner the better because he wants to make an early decision.

  • I doubt we offer Campbell any time in the near future. I think that's still six months to a year away. We need to offer, recruit and secure a commitment from an '14 QB first and we don't appear to be close to doing that at the moment either.

Btw, Coleman Key is my dark horse pick to be the the first '14 QB to receive an offer. The coaches invited him to come back up for the BBQ in late July. Clearly, they are interested in him.

Deshone Kizer- Toledo, OH (Central Catholic)
Caleb Henderson - Alexandria, VA (Lake Braddock)
Drew Barker - Hebron, KY (Connor)
Chance Stewart - Sturgis, MI (Sturgis)
Kyle Allen - Scottsdale, AZ (Desert Mountain)
Coleman Key - Broken Arrow, OK (Broken Arrow)
Tyler Wiegers - Franklin, MI (Country Day school)
Cody Callaway - Grafton, OH (Midview)
Ricardo Johnson - St. Paul, MN (Cretin-Derham)

Clint, if it's true that Meyer told Barker that he's their top priority at QB for the '14 class, do you think that might give us a legitimate shot with Caleb Henderson? Like many, I assumed that Caleb was a Buckeye lock but with them looking hard at Barker, we may actually have a shot with him.

Thats tough to say. If he is their top priority why haven't they offered him? Once offers go out for QB's in the 2014 class the picture will be much more clear.
