Brian Kelly interviews with the Eagles...

  • EF_Wolverine

  • That would be so bad for Notre Dame. If I was Kelly, I don't think I could turn down an NFL job though.

    Who would replace him?

  • I would say Bob Diaco, the ND DC.

  • It's funny that this happened. We were just talking about this today that it would be funny if Kelly left for the NFL before Saban. It makes more sense that he would if you just look at his progression in his coaching career. He is a guy that keeps moving up the ladder looking for new challenges and he has no ties what so ever to ND, so yeah I think he's gone.

  • He's not going anywhere.

The Eagles are looking like fools though with this info leaking. Looks like they keep missing on their choices because people are using it as a chance to get a raise.

How they looking like fools. They have interviewed probably 10 guys already and only one they missed out on is Doug Marrone.

  • I think Kelly may see the writing on the wall. This may have been his ONLY chance in the NCG, how often will they go undefeated? Not very.... This was his best chance and he got blistered. Honestly will have a better chance to win a championship in the NFL than at ND.

Not a chance.. My personal pick would be James Franklin, but don't see BK leaving so soon.

  • I really dont think Kelly is all that spectacular. The only thing that hurts ND short term is their current recruiting class. Long term I dont see Kelly being all that great, but if it hurts recruiting short term (this year and next year) thats probably a better outcome overall.

What do you mean you "don't see BK leaving soon"? He's already had one interview with the Eagles and there is enough mutual interest to have a second meeting in a few days. Or maybe you're not just being a homer and have a legitimate reason for believing Kelly will stay at ND for the near future?

I would expect ND fans to be livid at Kelly if he left. Purple-faced, if you will....

  • I would say 'not a chance' but last time I said that Saban took the Dolphins job.

  • Now that Kelly has interviewed with the Eagles the Bears can't be far behind. They're interviewing every "offensive" genius in the world except me (in my case offensive has nothing to do with football).

I see what you did there. lol

But really, in typical NFL coaching searches, the 1st meeting is the full interview, the 2nd is contract negotiation. There aren't 5 rounds of interviews, so the fact that Kelly is going back for a 2nd meeting already is very telling.

Just told that there is REAL interest by Brian Kelly. Not just leverage play. Getting interesting. Fast.

This makes sense because he probably would have got a raise because he took ND to the national championship.

  • I can see Brian Kelly leaving Notre Dame now.

It's unlikely that Notre Dame has another undefeated season against a good schedule in the near future. (That's not a slight. It's just difficult to go undefeated. For instance, 3 of Saban's 4 MNCs have been with 1 loss.)

Hence, if Kelly truly wants to coach in the NFL, then he may not get another shot until a few years down the road. And with so many NFL jobs open this season he won't have as many options to choose from in the future.

But Kelly's departure may not necessarily be a bad thing for ND which could promote DC Bob Diaco.

Diaco is a good coach, but is nowhere near ready to handle the pressures of being a head coach at a place like Notre Dame.

My other thought on this is Kelly might have seen what the competition looks like and feel he can't get to the Alabama level at Notre Dame. This isn't a slight on Notre Dame, but they have some similar limitations like Michigan by dealing with higher academic standards than other schools and not really participating in the shady recruiting game. And let's not even go into the speculation lots are mentioning as to why Alabama was so much bigger, stronger, and faster on that field. Just like Michigan looked in Game 1, Notre Dame didn't look close to competing with Bama in that game. If a coach feels they are handicapped by following different rules than other coaches, it could be a reason to look at the NFL.

The NFL is a lot tougher, but in some ways it is a much more level playing field than college, at least for a head coach if they can evaluate talent with their GM.

I can see Brian Kelly leaving Notre Dame now, because Brian Kelly doesn't seem to have any of the characteristics that might lead him to stay with Notre Dame.

  • Kelly is a moron. Good coach, but kind of a moron. His goal has always been the NFL. I just didn't think he would consider a jump so fast.

And all these guys are dumb. A coach as a prestige school is frankly better than any NFL coaching gig.

  • ND's board is in meltdown mode. Also if I was Kelly and I planned to stay at ND I would be making a statement squashing the rumors about the whole Eagles situation now.

Kelly spent 3 years at Central Michigan, 3 years at Cincy and he now has completed 3 years at ND. Sounds like a guy with a plan.

Now with regards to the NFL, there are multiple advantages: you don't have to worry about compliance, about how your players do in the classroom, you don't have to spend nearly as much time worrying about what guys get up to on their own time, you don't have to deal with boosters, you don't have to go on recruiting trips as a sleazy salesman, you don't as a rule lose your star players after a couple of years. As a pure football coach the NFL is much better IMO, way too much peripheral stuff in college.
