Breakdown of Purdue's recruiting class

wow thats huge playoff for football! but yea with that many teams i guess you'd have to do it like that.

Yep, and with that many teams, it's still very difficult to get in. It's similar to what would happen if there were a 16 team playoff in FBS - basically every team that makes it is very good. Every now and then, you'll get a 7-3 team that wins there conference and gets an automatic bid, and they'll typically get destroyed in the first round. But in general, it's mostly 10-0 and 9-1 teams across the board.

You know, you cut the number of teams total and the number of teams in the playoffs in half, you get down to the FBS number with 16 team playoff.

Exactly. With that many teams, there are naturally a lot more conferences. And at that level, without the lure of conference championship games, most conferences have somewhere between 8-10 teams. The way the selection process for the playoffs works is that, as long as your conference has enough teams in it (I believe the minimum is 8), then the champion gets an automatic bid to the playoffs. With so many conferences, that only leaves about (I believe, but it could have increased a bit) 5-6 at-large spots available.

Again, this just further illustrates the hypocrisy of the NCAA, as they have no problem with those kids playing five playoff games often right in the heart of final exams. And at that level, most of the travel is by bus, or by commercial airline for a trip over 500 miles. So the travel takes much, much longer than it does for FBS teams.

yea that argument about too many games has always been real weak. I don't think anyone that knows anything about college football has ever beleived the bcs system has been about anything but money.

Too many games, academics, too much travel, etc - all extremely weak and easily-refutable excuses.
