Brandon Catfishes Michigan players

  • Holtzheartbucks said...

Would the Teo situation not be the biggest learning tool you could have? I think Brandon had good intentions with this but the way it's coming seems creepy and downright odd especially so close to signing day.

Key thing to keep in mind here is that this was done BEFORE the Te'o incident was brought to light.

You're using an extreme example though. This wasn't a situation where they developed some kind of intimate relationship with any of the players. This was someone friending them, gathering information off their online footprint, and then showing them what they're doing wrong on social media.

Also, if anyone's willing to send creepy texts and dickpics to some hot chick behind their wife or gf's back, they don't have any moral ground to stand on.

It's not an extreme example, but fine. Change it from your parents to your workplace or your boss. It's all the same. They shouldn't be doing it and you would be justifiably upset if it happened to you.

This is NOT catfishing either, btw, as Kyle Rowland suggested in his tweet. That is a mischaracterization of what happened.

I probably would be a bit upset about that, but that's not what happened here, and I wasn't saying that type of extreme is ok. I approved of what Brandon and the Tennessee company actually did in terms of internet education for the team.

Not exactly a flattering story for the AD though.

    How is it not?

It was an educational exercise and preparing them for the dangers that are out there.

  • I have no problem with Dave Brandon pulling this stunt or making it public. It teaches our players a first-hand lesson and lets the public (i.e. parents of targets) know that we make an effort to educate our players.

Political correctness be damned. I consider myself a student of old school ruthlessness.

I'm glad this was published to make it clear the 11W and deadspin articles are inaccurate. And I'm glad Brandon didn't really have someone catfish the team. I agree, what he actually did seems fine.

I agree. I was going of the earlier reports. What Brandon actually hired the firm to do is fine.

Yeah, where I draw the line is actually developing intimate relationships. Just friending and gathering information is fine.

  • I think apologies to Mr. Brandon are in order. It seems that a few of our loyal followers reacted to a reporter who follows the Buckeyes and experienced a little premature ejaculation in there desire to jump on Mr. Brandon's ass.

  • More here. Seems totally reasonable...when you actually here the real story.

If the article you linked to is correct, then it is certainly not "catfishing." The fact that an Ohio website characterized it as such is simply irresponsible or ignorant of what catfishing means. Seems like he is just trying to make the UM athletic department look bad.

  • It seems weird that when the, as Hoke put it, "hot" young lady entered the room with all the players, many of them (the players) were speechless. I'm guessing they all discussed academics and weren't interested in her whatsoever. If you aren't trying to "ensnare" them why not use an average looking girl or a guy even? There was obviously a motive to try and get as much inappropriate material as they could. I really don't want to start a war here and that's not what I'm here to do it just seems odd that the AD of UM would try and do anything remotely "Big Brother'ish" (no pun) with Signing day just five days away.

Did Michigan 'catfish' its own players?

Michigan athletic department uses unique technique on student athletes to teach pitfalls of social media.

I'm thinking this story is significantly less big of a deal than a lot of people itt are making it out to be

Exactly...what about our government giving F-16's and Abraham tanks to Egypt, whos president is a member of the radical muslim brother hood. Of the fact that we still dont know why 4 Americans were killed in Benghazi. Or that the economy is hovering at an anemic 2% growth rate in the 4th year of this "recovery."

Certain individuals may tend to sublimate such actions, but others have different viewpoints and thus being dissolute is of no conscious to them.

Yea because Im sure if Charles Waugh was used, it would have been a more impactfull learning experience....oh wait, that already happened to your team without seeking the consultation of any outside agencies. Michigan had to actually pay for 3rd party companies to provide for this type of education, rather then sex offenders doing it on their own free will in Columbus.
