Brady Hoke Question??

  • WE ARE ND76 said...

Here was a comment from respected Notre Dame writer Tim Prister today in his review:

It’s funny how perceptions are so heavily influenced by results alone. Brady Hoke was hailed as a genius in Ann Arbor-land for the magic he worked in his first year, turning a 7-6 team in 2010 into an 11-2 team in 2011. A year later, one can’t help but wonder what is going through the man’s head as the NBC cameras keep turning their attention to Hoke and the faraway, what-do-we-do-next, what-is-going-on-here expression on his face. Hoke does not look like a guy that everyone in the organization can turn to and get an answer from. Right or wrong, that’s the pose he strikes.

As for not wearing a headset during a majority of the game, Hoke has explained in the past that he doesn’t want to disturb the train of thought of his coordinators, who have spent more time analyzing film during the week than he has, simply by the nature of each coach’s responsibility.

But how a head coach can accept being in the dark about the play call and the thought process of his coordinators is perplexing. Trust in your coordinators is one thing; removing yourself from the process on game day is another.

IMO, that writer is completely wrong with his assumptions, especially with the organizational answers. Hoke didn't wear the headset for a majority of the game, but he did have it on for the crucial parts of the game.

Funny how this is all being brought up now that Michigan has lost a second game, everyone is calling Hoke overrated and saying he got lucky last year like he is 0-4 right now.

When Michigan wins the B1G this year, I'm excited to see where the critics will be.

Prister is a very level-headed and as I noted respected writer. He's been a journalist for 30+ years and was the founding editor of Blue and Gold Illustrated. This is a feature he does called Tale of the Tape each week after games where he notes things that he picks up on analyzing the game. I don't think he was taking a shot at Hoke or anything of that nature just noting the piece on the headset and his body language during the game. It's little things like that he is noting that are ok when you are winning but if you end up losing a few more games then expected fans will be over analyzing all of a sudden.

BS just another ND fan trying to take his shots at Hoke now that we lost.

Who gives a crap what an ND fan thinks anyway?

Notre Dame got their ass kicked last saturday, Michigan just didn't execute and ND like a good team would do took advantage. Not sure having a head set on would have changed anything or caused the team any issues as sometimes things just don't go your way in games, it is what it is. Sounds like to me this writer is really really reaching... this will be a funny thread to revisit at the end of the year.

We also turned the ball over 4 times ourselves last year in that same game and that was the second game of Hoke's tenure at Michigan. I would say last year we didn't deserve to win the game because ND largely outplayed us but I still don't think they had a better team last year and their record reflected that, we won because Denard made up for his mistakes last year by making plays. This game denard didn't and played horribly, the worst game of his career. He was single handily responsible for 5 turnovers(Can call it 4 I guess, considering 1 was essentially a hailmary at the end of the half). I would never rag on Denard or single handily pick out a kid as to why a team loss, but we outgained Notre Dame overall 299 to 239(Their lowest output of the season offensively in total yards, points, and passing yards) in total yards going into the 4th quarter it was even more lopsided 236 to 140. Turnovers and missed opportunities in the redzone cost us this game, Notre Dame like any good team should/would do captialized on our mistakes. It took 6 turnovers to generate 10 of those 13 points,. 3 of those 6 turnovers occured on our own side of the field setting them up in excellent field position.

    Tell me where im wrong?

  • The headset not a big deal. He puts it on when he deems it necessary. I would be more concerned if he turned into a purple-headed spit-cussing tantrum-ass on national TV. shrug

  • I felt like they owed us 1 tbh... I wish it wouldn't have happened the way it did, but it didn't feel unjustified.

But to stay on topic, Hoke is not lost nor does he look lost on the sideline. Everytime I see him he's w/ a coach, a player, a unit or in the huddle. He puts the headset on at points in the game and his way of managing the sideline is quite alright w/ me. Hoke and Mattison are in constant discussion throughout the game.

I agree he doesn't look lost and I don't think that is exactly what Prister was trying to say. I think what he was saying is fans are fickle and if Michigan happens to go 8-4 or 7-5(not likely) this season fans will find things like this to harp on that are ok when you are winning but all of a sudden are a problem. It's ok for Saban to yell and yell some more because he wins but last year when Coach Kelly was yelling in similar fashion(as was I tbh) fans were saying you shouldn't yell at the players that way. It's just the classic example of you can do what you want as long as you win. The lack of a headset is just an interesting dynamic for a big time head coach.

There is civil dissent (which should go on tBB), and then there is posting crap from a domer writer.

That writer has no clue what he is talking about. Hoke puts the headset on when he feels he needs to. He will tell Borges to run certain plays when he feels they should be run. He is involved in the thought process, and isn't totally dark to what is going on. The writer that you quoted takes little jabs at Hoke, as is to be expected with the fanbase he is pandering to. Don't come here acting like this is just a civil question when you have a comment like this in there,
"Hoke and the faraway, what-do-we-do-next, what-is-going-on-here expression on his face. Hoke does not look like a guy that everyone in the organization can turn to and get an answer from."

That is laughable coming from a Michigan fan. Your team has the worst site(The Fort) on any of the network over on Rivals. You really are speaking on things that you have no clue about when it comes to Tim Prister. He's not taking a jab at Hoke and he's actually been really respectful of Hoke. The 2 ND sites that I actually belong to this one and Irish Illustrated(Rivals) have some of the best writers around from the standpoint that they don't just pump sunshine up our backside about our team or knock other teams. You guys seem to have a good group here compared to the Fort and that is why I enjoy coming over here and conversing the same way SDWolverine spends a lot of time over on the Rockne Board.

My question was asked before Tim Prister's comment that I shared. I added that comment because it pertained to the thread by offering insight from a respected journalist as I noted. You may not agree with Prister's commentary and that is fine but he was not being malicious or condescending towards Hoke. He was just making an observation.

What happens at the fort has nothing to do with this site. I have read one thing from Prister, what you quoted, and he is clueless to what he is speaking on. Saying that Hoke isn't a leader for the team to look to, isn't being respectful. The writer is pandering, you can't see it, which is fine.

The comment didn't add insight, it showed his ignorance on the topic. I don't agree with it, and I think he is a dumbass. According to you, I'm not being malicious or condescending towards him, just making an observation. thumbsup

  • After reading this thread I thought I'd add my two cents on the subject. The headset issue has been revisited over and over again and it'll be brought up again in the future. I agree it's odd to see a coach not wearing a headset during a game when everyone else does it. Sports writers and fans see this as a legit way to question or mock coach Hoke which is why I have a few questions for Hoke's critics.
    1) Hoke rarely wore his headset last year during his run to the national coach of the year. How many coaches, past and present, have wore a headset but haven't won that award?
    2) Hoke is currently 13-4 during his time at Michigan. His 4 losses came to MSU, Iowa, Bama and ND respectively. None of the games I just mentioned were what I'd call a bad loss. My question is would Michigan have won any of these games had he been wearing a headset?
    3) Even had Hoke been wearing a headset, what play calls would he have changed during the ND game?
    4) Would Hoke wearing a headset keep Denard from making a bad decision and throwing picks? Hoke could wear a Maize and Blue Ironman outfit but even that wouldn't prevent Denard or anyone else from making mistakes.
    5) I find it funny that this ND writer picks on Hoke for not wearing a headset when ND's previous opponent MSU went away from their bread and butter by passing the ball almost exclusively the entire second half. Dantonio wears a headset and yet the Spartan offense never reverted back to what they were. Why is there no mention of Dantonio getting in the ear of Roshar about the play selection? Not even a comment on Narduzzi and his played out motivational act of coming down from the box to coach on the sideline? Couldn't Narduzzi just start the game on the sideline so an emotional high might not be needed in the 4th quarter?
    6) Considering the Coaching staff gets together a number of times a week to discuss the up coming game plan, Isn't it possible that as long as Hoke doesn't see a deviation from that game plan that it's possible that he knows what's going on and sees no reason to check in to Borges as long as the game plan is being followed?
    7) Refering to coach Hokes expressions on the sideline, it's funny how perception works. I notice every time I watch a Michigan game coach Hoke is either talking to his players or Mattison. Congratulating good plays and coaching up kids that made mistakes. The cameras could catch Hoke coaching his players up a hundred times a game but the only thing people will remember are the few times he's caught deep in thought with a blank look on his face. Would he be any better if he were to throw childish temper tantrums and cuss out Denard everytime he made a mistake?
In closing I'd just like to say that I have every bit of confidence in coach Hoke wether he wears a headset or not. I believe he'll continue to do a great job in Ann Arbor. Don't believe me? Ask the Bear Bryant trophy in his trophy case.

I doubt Hoke would have ran that HB pass where Vince Smith threw a pick. And honestly that probably would have made a MAJOR difference in the outcome of this game if that pick didn't happen.

    Just saying..

I completely disagree. I bet Hoke and Borges were on the exact same page with that call. They've been practicing it a lot the past few weeks and probably thought they would catch ND off guard being so early in the game. It worked well it just wasn't executed properly.
