  • This offense does not have weapons on it... Sure, a better QB may make them look better, but the reality is, their isn't a better QB on the team than Denard and last night showed that and then some... Denard gives us the best shot to win but how does Borges utilize him better??? Run him more??? Then what you get is Denard on the sideline for the 2nd half... Its a double edged sword... You let Denard try to manage the game and not turn it over while keeping his jersey somewhat clean... Then let the D take care of the rest... Michigan was chewing up the clock and heading to take the lead 10-7 when Denard left... I have no doubt that Michigan would have been in it until the end with Denard playing and at this point, that is all we can ask Borges to do with the weapons he has(or doesn't have)

The lack of carries by Rawls is a headscratcher, but maybe we just don't have all the information we need to understand the decision. And it's not like Borges operates in a vacuum. He and Hoke must have discussed it and Hoke must be on board with how Borges is using the RBs. If Hoke wanted Rawls to play more, he would be playing more. I don't understand why he's not, but at this point in the season you have to assume it's a conscious choice to play Fitz almost exclusively and Hoke agrees with it.

I've heard, similar to the Hayes situation, that Rawls can't hold on to the ball at practice. As we all know these coaches are infatuated with protecting the ball (more so than gaining yards?..) No matter the case I think Rawls should get more carries in game situations until he either proves the coaches wrong or backs up their assessments.

Fred Jackson referred to him as Mike Hart with greater top-end speed. Either that's bullshit, or our coaches are too stubborn to try something new. I'd like to think it isn't the latter.

Ok. I hadn't heard that, but it definitely would make sense.

  • I can't stand what Borges is doing on offense this year. The read option does not need to be as much east west as Michigan is making it this year. A couple weeks ago I went back and watched some of the highlights from last year and Fitz was used much more north and south in the read option play. It worked so much better.

I love the pass plays Borges has been calling the last couple of weeks. Not as many playfakes and not making Denard throw on the run. I think Denard has looked better throwing the ball the last few weeks. However, we need more first down passing. Getting Denard into 3rd and 6 constantly before we throw the ball is a recipe for not scoring points. We don't need to run Denard more, what Borges needs to do is to become more balanced in his playcalling.

And i agree with everyone who has said we are very predictable. Borges needs to figure something out in this regard.

Have Borges "retire" and hire Jim Chaney after Dooley gets canned? One can only dream.

Current Tennessee OC. Previously the OC at Purdue from 97-05 where he constructed some solid offenses and coached up some solid QBs. He then became an NFL positions coach before moving to UTenn and changed his offensive philosophy to become slightly more pro-style than spread. His name came to mind because of his experience with both spread and Pro-style offenses(though I know Purdue's spread was a lot different than RR's running spread).

    Bio excerpts from UTk site:

"Purdue was ranked in the top 10 in the nation in total offense in six seasons, including 2000, when the Boilermakers ranked fourth."

:From 1997-2001, Chaney served as recruiting coordinator and helped the Boilermakers sign some of the country's top high school talent. The 1998 class was ranked second in the Big Ten and 11th nationally. Each of Chaney's last five classes was in the top 30 nationally."

"Quarterback Drew Brees, a second-round draft pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2001, was the NCAA total offense champion in 2000, averaging 349.1 yards per game, and received the Maxwell Award as the nation's outstanding player. Tim Stratton received the inaugural John Mackey Award as the nation's best tight end in 2000.

More importantly, the 2000 combination of Chaney and Brees under head coach Joe Tiller led Purdue to its first Big Ten championship and Rose Bowl berth in 33 years."

  • Thanks.

I had no idea that Purdue had recruited so well earlier in the millennium.

And I know that Tennessee has struggled under Derek Dooley but the offense has impressed me for the most part.

  • BORGES IS A GENIUS biggrin

Seriously though, I gave Borges a lot of crap last week for the debacle that was the Nebraska game. However, it seems with a competent passing quarterback, the guy might actually be pretty good at it.

I'm still not a Borges fan, it seems more like he just relies on being more talented than the other team. More times than not, I knew what plays Michigan was about to run based on the situation, the formation, and the personnel.

Although I will admit, that if he can build on this next week my opinion may change, not that it matters anyways.

Yeah, I don't believe Borges is the right man for the job. He does this every time Michigan plays a bad opponent, it's not like this was an aberration from the usual.

I'm willing to give Borges a chance with the GCO but I hope that he keeps some of the zone read spread option elements.

I think the way Borges is running the hybrid pro-style with DG at QB, and a quick scat back/WR in DR is the way he should recruit personal for the future. He should also have these formations and plays in the future to be used. He can also show tape of these last few games with how he uses Denard to recruit the uber 5* athletes that would normally look for spread offenses.
