Big Ten Renaming the Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy

  • Just one more domino falling in the collapse of JoePa.

Sounds like it will now be the Stagg Trophy.

Big Ten removing Joe Paterno's name from championship trophy

Paterno, the winningest coach in major college football, was to be part of the trophy with Amos Alonzo Stagg. - USATODAY.com

  • The right move in my opinion. Why not name it the Yost-Stagg Trophy? They were the two grandfathers of the Western Conference (now B1G).

Because the Big 10 was clearly trying to avoid naming it after any Michigan or Ohio State people. Otherwise, why pick Stagg, coach of a team that is no longer in the Big 10?

Paterno on the trophy always was a joke, considering the guy coached most of his career outside the Big 10. That was even before the current mess.

I am fine leaving Stagg as the only name on the trophy, frankly. Or add someone like Red Grange, or something.

  • Would love to see it named for Yost, but yeah, it seems like the B1G was worried about showing favoritism to OSU and UM when naming the trophies, so I'd be surprised if they added his name to it. We'll see.

While true, a 17 year stint in the conference isnt exactly a pit stop. It shouldve been the Bo/Woody trophy, but thats the name of the coach of the year award, how about "The B1G Championship." Not honorable enough?

Well, look. Paterno had a long stint in the Big 10...but he is far from a Big 10 icon. Bo and Woody clearly were more influential. Simply put, they were looking for non-Michigan and OSU names to put on the trophy.

I would rather have a unnamed trophy, but have no problem with Stagg's name on it, I guess.
