  • There is a ton of speculation in irt starting offensive line positions. Now, this is not a starting thread where I have researched every tidbit through spring to offer up what I think will be the starting spots then try dispell anyone elses top five. Just a question to get everyones opinions...

    LT: Taylor Lewan
LG: LG is the only position that hasn't been decided yet, but it seems the top 2 candidates are Elliot Mealer and Joey Burzynski.
    C: Ricky Barnum
    RG: Patrick Omameh
    RT: Michael Schofield

I realized that I worded that bad after. I meant to include the two deep and not just starters. This line should be fun this year

Agreed with this, but I would put Bryant in at LG with Mealer, and then throw Kalis into the mix later in the season.

To start the season I see it like this,

    LG: Mealer, Bryant, Kalis, Burzynski
    C: Barnum

Possible scenerio, that I think has a 1% chance of happening,

    LG: Barnum
    C: Miller

  • I think there will be freshman in that two deep. Buy coach Heck is tough and will give the best kids a shot. This fall will be interesting.

Big Will looks good. I want a RS from Pipkins, but I realize that is unlikely. Hopefully he can hold his own plugging the middle this year.

  • I like bryant a lot as well. Kid is a mauler. If he can get some pass rush technique I like him to start. Hopefully kalis doesn't have to start but can backup mutliple positions. I wish they can all redshirt but we will have plenty of redshirted olineman.

And yeah we hear this about him every year but he is 308 right now. That is completely different from any other year

  • Bryant is a RG and Kalis will play LG.

IMO Mealer starts off as the starter at LG and Kalis supplants him sometime during conference play.

    Norbit

  • I never really worried about a true 2 deep on the OL. More than likely you have a to 8 guys and they will be the ones to play.

    Lewan
    Schofield
    Barnum
    Omameh
    Bryant
    Mealer
    Miller
    Kalis

While I think Kalis would make one nasty guard - maybe even be good enough to start this year - I think he has to stay at tackle this year. The only tackles on the roster that aren't freshman are walk-ons and only 1 has seen any game action - Gunderson, and that was in garbage time. I think Kalis is head and shoulders above all the other backup tackles - unless Braden or Magnusson prove themselves capable, but I think they both need to redshirt.

Kalis has already been informed by the coaching staff that he will play guard and has been preparing for the switch all off season.

IMO Schofield takes over at LT if lewan goes down and Omameh moves to RT in place of Schofield.

Ahh I was unawares that Omameh was going to have the flexibility to move to Tackle. He came in as Guard/Tackle sorts, but after starting for two years at Guard I forgot that. Knowing that, I wouldn't be surprised if Kalis is starting by mid-year at Guard.

Why he is one of the few kids that actually looks ready to go. The way he moved around at the All-American game and weighed 360 and is now down to 338. Can't wait to see him play this year

I completely agree. His athleticism is off the charts for a NT.

Big difference in moving around against HS kids compared to college kids who have been working out for 3+ years more than him. Rarely do you see an interior dlineman make an impact early in their career.
