Big 2, Little X - how I missed you so

  • tOSU fan here. Not trolling, but just want to say, I'm glad to have UM back. This is, has been, and will continue to be tOSU and UM's conference. Sure we'll have a Little team pop up on the radar for a season or two .. but, they won't consistently play Big Boy football. We built this conference. It'll take alot more than a whiny coach from Wisky or a back-peddling coach from MSU to upset the decades of football we built.

Kudos to Coach Hoke for not bringing himself down to the whiny level of the others. He knows the recruiting game .. and despite the "Ohio" crap he started ... he respects tOSU as much as tOSU respects UM. It's a rivalry --- one of respect, admiration .. and battle. Hoke gets that. These other B1G coach jags don't get it .. because they aren't a part of it and frankly, never will be.

Bring on 11/24/12 my friends to the north.

Fine. But you need to believe us the next time we tell you what a whiny douche Dantonio is.

  • I'm gonna hold off on the "big 2, little 10" talk until we play each other for the Rose Bowl 7 out of 10 years.

There's a lot of work ahead.

We gave Dantonio a hallpass given he was Tress's DC during the title season. However, Dantonio just used up that one freebie. What a shame. Now, I suspect when Urb has his foot on MSU's throat and drops 50 on Dantonio's D .. few in Buckeye Nation will feel sorry for him for having poked the bear.

Agreed. Blue back? I don't even remember RR.

He means that neither program is "back" till they actually start winning a lot over a period of years. So far the tOSU and UM have a lot of stars on paper. Before it can go back to the "Big 2 Little 10", UM and tOSU actually have to dominate the conference on the football field.

Could that happen? Sure. Is it definitely going to happen? I don't see how you can say that. tOSU is ineligible for the Big 10 title next year and UM plays in a pretty competitive division. I don't exactly see Nebraska, Wisconsin and MSU going away any time soon.

The last time both UM and tOSU dominated the Big 10 was in 2006. I think the changes of either tOSU or UM being a factor in the Big 10 each year is pretty high, but both being consistently dominate programs for a decade straight? It'll take more than 1 year of great recruiting to make that happen.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Really? Really?? 7 conference titles in last 10 years doesn't constitute OSU dominance? ;-)

MSU is a second-tier program located behind tOSU and UM .. planted somewhere firmly between Northwestern and Indiana.

Osu went away for 1 year. Michigan for 4. Those seem to be the only years that matter to some people. Good coaching + highly regarded recruits = best chance for success. RR had decent recruiting classes butno coaching. Same for OSU last year. I like where things are headed.

Not to really disagree with you but Michigan's was more of going away for 3 years. Carr's last year wasn't great but we still hit 9 wins and won a bowl game against Urban/Tebow led Florida team. Then the 3 year debacle of RR.

When you lose to App St, get blown out by Oregon, and lose to OSU again, the year is an unmitigated disaster.

I guess we will just have to disagree on that year then. I just don't see how 9 wins is an unmitigated disaster.

    He said OSU AND UofM.

And if beating both of those schools, winning your division, getting back to back 11 win seasons, and dominating your in state rivals is considered "second-tier" then I am just fine with that position.

Let's be honest though, how often does happen? Congrats on the recent success but let's not act like you own this conference.

I'm not acting like we own the conference. Nobody does, it has been very wide open the last two years and looks to be for some time with the new alignments. What I am saying is before you guys act like you own the conference just remember that Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan State, Wisconsin would disagree.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut (pun intended). When what you described becomes commonplace rather than a point of significance, then you will have reached tOSUs and UMs level.

lol Do you guys even read posts or do you just focus on phrases like "We beat Michigan" or "Paul Bunyan" and then start on the defensive.

I know you guys both had lots of stars and cool things like that, all I am saying is lets wait a few seasons or even a game or two before talking about how you guys will dominate once again. I think that is pretty reasonable.

You guys have a solid coaching staff that does a great job at developing talent, the same can be said for Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin but recruiting is the lifeblood of programs. Now, that's not to say you can't have success without recruiting at a high level but Michigan and Ohio State are recruiting at multiple levels above the rest. I understand that it's been like that for a long time but if we look at your recent success it came from some of your higher ranked classes, the vast majority of your highest ranked class were the main contributors for your team. Now obviously, one year won't make or break a program but if the current trend of Michigan and Ohio State recruiting at a top 5 level then it will make it very hard for the rest of the conference to keep up. The other teams in the conference have made a living being in that 20-35 recruiting ranking and there aren't really any teams in that area for 2012. I think 2013 will be a big indicator for the future of the conference(on and off the field).

Thats fair enough and I would agree, except a lot of our success didn't come from those high rated recruits we had, in fact quite the opposite. The four big players we lose (Cunningham, Cousins, Worthy, Robinson) were all low level three stars or two stars.

    Agreed.

For me, it's the size of the gap between Michigan, Ohio, and the rest of the conference in terms of the talent that's being added to the table. Being able to recruit like Michigan and Ohio is like drafting with all first and second round picks. It's doesn't necessarily mean the players will pan out but you have a hell of a lot better chance.

    jimtaco

  • Also the dynamics of conferences has changed to the point where I don't think you will see anything like what happened in the 70's again. With divisions and what not you just don't see it anymore. The SEC has had LSU, Alabama, Florida, Auburn and to an a certain degree South Carolina and Georgia compete. The Big12 would be the closest thing to a Big 2 with Oklahoma and Texas but even then Okie State has been good. KSU, Baylor, Texas Tech, and even Kansas a while back have all had their years.
