    His loss.

    Berger is perfect for Michigan.

    Agreed. Lock him up.

  • Berger is a very good prospect. Honestly, I'd be surprised if his offer from OSU isn't commitable, even though a number of other top LB's are high on OSU. I'll be interested to see if he ends up at Michigan or OSU.

Surprisingly enough, the Bucknut writers have been very adamant that Berger has a committable offer from OSU

Yeah, Urban is recruiting with a big ego. He thinks he can just go and get a commit from any kid in the country. It seems like he'd rather roll the dice and recruit a Florida/Texas 5 star than recruit a mid/high 4 star Ohio kid.

Realistically speaking, Meyer and his staff have done a great job recruiting so far. They've got a lot of national interest from legit prospects, so I can understand him going after...everyone under the sun.

The undefeated season is carrying a lot of weight right now. I'll be very interested to see what happens to recruiting if they lose next year during the regular season.

Urbans has been very fortunate how his past two classes ended. In each year, he had holes to fill with about 1 month from signing day, and lucked out in '12 with Penn State signing Spence and some other kids in the nick of time, and this year gets some fortuitous commitments from Johnson (LB) who was going to Auburn, Wilson who was going to Oregon, and Bell who appears didnt have any other choice because Bama was full and Tennessee was just too uncertain.....He could have easily missed on all 3 of those kids this past year, and got bailed out in the last few weeks because he decided not to take the Ohio talent in McCray and Gedeon.

By that same token, it's likely Michigan wouldn't have gotten Ross Douglas without Penn State's off-the-field issues and they probably wouldn't have gotten Derrick Green with Auburn/Tennessee both having awful seasons as well. It's worked both ways, but probably a little moreso for the Buckeyes at this point.

The real key to recruiting is wait until a big program starts tanking and immediately start offering all their commits... biggrin

I guess I am confused on recruiting rules but I didn't think current players could interact with commits once they signed their LOI

Shane is not considered a current player until he is enrolled at Michigan I believe.

I think they can on campus. It's the same as a player talking to a recruit.

  • I don't think Shane can tweet/call/email other recruits now (not in his class), so there are some limitations.

That is such an unbelievably stupid rule IMO. I understand the incentive behind it, but for the love of god, high school kids should be allowed to call whichever other high school kids they want to talk to.

Iirc, If they have a preexisting relationship they can still do those things.

Like for example, it would be forbidden for Shane to recruit Lorenzo Featherston, because they most likely don't know each other. But if there is a stud that Shane knew and was friends with before his recruiting process started, he can still talk with him and tweet/call/whatever he wants to do.

That first recruiting class of Meyer's was crazy lucky about PSU imploding. Carmen Williams, Armani Reeves, Tommy Schutt, Joey O' Conner, and for all intents and purposes, Noah Spence were all 4/5 star guys committed to that jumped ship to Ohio from PSU. Not to mention hiring Tyler Decker's primary recruiter from ND and getting him. Pittman and Dodson were legit flips of guys who probably would have ended up at Ohio if they weren't going through their own crap. But it's not a terrible strategy to have a scholly or two left to give at the end of the cycle because coaching changes happen every season. It's worked wonders for Ohio so far.

Yes it's pretty stupid, especially if there's a preexisting relationship (Da'Shawn Hand and Derrick Green, for example). But I'm sure there are quite a few unscrupulous coaches out there who would "use" currently enrolled student-athletes as a conduit to recruit potentials.

With the boom of social media, camps, and 7 on 7, it's almost like everyone has a 'pre-existing relationship'. Back in the day it was kids who played on the same team or from the same town.
