Basketball Recruiting / Offseason

  • Coach Beilein and the other coaches have done an excellent job overall of identifying, evaluating, and recruiting talent.

They seem to have a knack for finding underrated, overlooked talent.

Now that they have returned Michigan to national prominence by building a program (rather than just a team), Michigan's basketball recruiting will pick up even more.

Football will always take precedence over basketball at Michigan. And perhaps rightfully so. But I wanted there to be a separate thread to discuss basketball recruiting. That way the basketball news won't detract from the football news.

I've put together a list of prospects Michigan is recruiting in 2014 and 2015. I'll amend it as things unfold. Recruiting is fluid.

    2014

    PG Edmond Sumner
    SG Devin Booker
    SF Trevon Bluiett
    SG/SF AJ Turner
    SF Vince Edwards
    PF/C Ricky Doyle (commit)

    2015

    PG Sedrick Barefield
    PG Hyron Edwards
    PG/SG Eric Davis
    SG/SF Luke Kennard

  • Can somebody give me a rundown of Bluiett's game? I could not correctly evaluate a basketball prospect if my life depended on it.

  • Good idea; something we should have done a while ago. I can have Mark add some names to this list when he's available too.

Thanks Steve. That would be good.

Hopefully, one of the mods or writers will pin this thread.

I've attached a good (which is to say recent) video of Trevon Bluiett.

I see a lot of similarities with Tim Hardaway Jr.

Bluiett is listed at 6'5" and around 190 pounds. He's a good scorer (as a shooter), a good ball handler, and a willing passer.

However, he's not particularly quick or fast. And unlike Hardaway Jr., he's more built and has a smaller vertical.

6'5 Trevon Bluiett is a beast. Inside, outside. Kid averages nearly 30 per game and plays about 3 quarters. Efficient, winner and cool come to mind when watching him work. Follow us on twitter @ballersblock

You're right. He reclassified because of the unfortunate accident but I still consider him as part of the 2013 class.

I think Tim Hardaway is a good player so if Bluiett is like him he would be a welcome addition imo.

  • We're not recruiting any 5'9 PGs, are we?

Bluiett is a really good shooter, one of the best in the 2014 class. He has decent length being 6'5" and has excellent ball handling for his size. He lacks elite athleticism which will hold him back a bit and he doesn't have great aggressiveness, which is shown by him not being a great rebounder or defender, but he still isn't bad at either.

He's a typical Beilein wing, long player who can shoot and handle the ball, but doesn't have great athleticism and isn't a great defender.

He reminds me of Stauskas, but with a slightly more developed game.

  • Finally IN on the first page for an important thread!

Thanks a lot Frank. This board needed some diversification.

Any idea when we will get an update from Devin Booker? Don't mean to nag, just curious.

I don't have any inside info.

Mark is perhaps best suited to answer. IIRC, he was very confident about Booker but that was before Duke offered.

Haha, that question was intended for Mark/Thomas/whoever else is in the know. It does come off as me directly asking you though.

You know a lot of stuff, however this is something I would not expect you to know.

    Edit: Thanks for the response.

I need a positive update on Booker. I am just not feeling to good about landing Booker right now.

I had a back and forth with Mark about Booker a week or so ago. He gave me the impression we are still in good shape with Booker even after Booker's visit to Duke. And by good shape he meant 50/50 odds or maybe even slightly better, which surprised me because all the reports were that the Duke visit went very well. He also said something about possibly speaking to Booker again soon (I think Booker has another visit coming up somewhere and Mark was going to try to to speak with him again after that visit). So keep your fingers crossed. This could be another neck and neck battle between UM and Duke similar to Mitch McGary, though I got the feeling Booker does not plan to drag the decision out as late into the process as McGary did.

Devin Booker said Roy Williams visited him today and North Carolina put the scholarship offer out there. No rush to decide though

UNC seems to be doing its due diligence here. Roy seems much more interested in Rashad Vaughn (from Minnesota).

I think Duke and Michigan will be in it until the end for Booker. He really likes us, but was openly pining for the Duke offer for a long time.

I really hope we can land at least one of Bluiett and Vince Edwards. Hardaway Jr will be gone for sure and odds are high GRIII is gone as well when that class gets on campus. So for me, the wing/forward position is the scariest. I figure Walton / Spike + Stauskus / Levert + any true freshman in that class will be a great guard rotation. At the 3/4 positions though, we'll be relying on guys who haven't even stepped on campus yet in Zak Irvin and Mark Donnal. So need to make sure we get some top talent at those spots coming in for depth purposes.

MSU also has offered Booker and was just up last week.
