    Who was the HEAD coach? How many national championship teams has Greg mattison coached? C'mon man, seriously the HC gets the credit as well as the blame, he is the one hiring the assistants, they work for him, under him and the coaches vision.

    The Head Coach doesn't have nearly as much time w/ the players on the day-to-day operations as the Coordinators and position coaches. There's not enough time in the day for a coach to be everywhere, so they have input on a group (w/ Hoke it's the line play, w/ Meyer the offense).

    So to give credit to Meyer for Mattison's defenses at Florida would be silly, especially considering Meyer himself called Mattison the best recruiter in football, so not only did Mattison coach that defense but he recruited it as well.

    Typical Michigan university blinders on, mattisons defense, well if I remember correctly he was the co-coordinator.
    At Florida, he served as co-coordinator of the defense with Charlie Strong Charlie Strong also served as assistant Head Coach and Linebackers coach while Greg also pulled double duty working as Defensive lines coach, but don't bother giving strong any credit, I mean after all he did get a head coaching gig. How did Meyer ever win a national championship without mattison, because he did!

    I am waiting for the Chris Spielman said so on ESPN, anytime now.

    I love watching last years game on BTN Spielman sounded like he wanted to both cry and break something towards the end of the game. Priceless!

    I never slammed your recruiting as a whole, just oline. Again learn how to comprehend.

    Hey knucklehead read the original post I was responding to, you are the one who can't comprehend "BRO", you pick pieces out of sentences and chime into others debate, you really are not that bright and actually quite a bore.

    Charlie Strong was great for that defense too, but i'm pretty sure he's not at ohio either. My point still stands, Meyer had amazing D-Coordinators at Florida it wasn't his defense. His defense this year is gonna be lead by the same group that was there last year is it not?

    Well factually wrong again sorry to say victor, heacock is gone withers is in as the co-coordinator with fickell, thanks

    To be fair, Urbie now has the vaunted Everett Withers running his D ...

    Total Defense - North Carolina:
    2008 (DC) 64th
    2009 (DC) 6th
    2010 (DC) 30th
    2011 (HC) 49th
    Average 38th

    Scoring Defense - North Carolina:
    2008 (DC) 32nd
    2009 (DC) 13th
    2010 (DC) 45th
    2011 (HC) 56th
    Average 37th

    again, factually incorrect, he is the co-defensive coordinator with Fickell, you guys seem to have a problem with the co word, just like mattison was the co-coordinator with Strong.

    A little Withers bio on top of your numbers: Yes what a loser he is!

    Withers has made accomplishments at several of his coaching stops, both college and the NFL. While he was the defensive backs coach of the Titans, they achieved a top ten defensive ranking in 2002, his first season with the Titans. From 2002 to 2004, the Titans grabbed 57 interceptions, the best ever for a three year span for the franchise, fourth best in the AFC and eighth best in the NFL. The Titans tallied 21 picks in 2004, with 16 coming from the Withers coached secondary.[4] In his first year with the Tar Heels, his defense totaled 20 interceptions, one shy of the school record for interceptions in a year. 2009 was an elite year for Withers's defense as they ranked sixth in total defense in the nation. They ranked 10th against the run, 13th in scoring defense and 14th in pass defense. The UNC defense was the only defense in the nation that was ranked in the top 15 in total yards allowed, scoring defense, run defense, pass defense, pass-efficiency defense, third down defense and tackles for loss. The Carolina defense totaled 19 interceptions and set an ACC record with 508 interception return yards. In 2010 the Tar Heels matched their interception total of 2009 with 19 picks. The Heels also ranked fourth in the ACC and 30th nationally in defense, even with injuries that made Withers play a different lineup every game. During the three total years that Withers was defensive coordinator of the Tar Heels, they totaled 58 interceptions

    Ohio's defense under interim HC Luke Fickell with veteran Jim Heacock as his DC:

    Total Defense: 19th
    Rushing Defense: 50th (Ouch!)
    Passing Defense: 14th
    Scoring Defense: 27th

    Not exactly intimidating, but I'm sure swapping out Heacock for Withers will make all the difference in the world. blank

  • You forgot about adding a little something called Urban Meyer, they will absolutely be improved to last year, pull up the defensive rankings for the past 5 years, show the history, show the trend, you pull up only one year, admittedly a bad year, Fickell will go back to where he was comfortable as a co-defensive coordinator and will be joined by Withers, they have talented players who will still need to learn to play togather but the elements to a successfull defense is there.

    mason01

  • Overall defensive rankings nationally:

    2006 = 2 OSU / 9 MU
    2007 = 1 OSU / 25 MU
    2008 = 7 OSU / 81 MU
    2009 = 5 OSU / 81 MU
    2010 = 3 OSU / 104 MU
    2011 = 27 OSU / 8 MU

    5 out of the past 6 years ranked in the top 10 OSU / 2 out of the past 6 years in the top 10 MU

    And Urbie fired the architect behind those defenses (Heacock) and replaced him with a guy who oversaw a steady deterioration of the defense over four years at an ACC basketball school (Withers). Gotta give Urbie credit for thinking outside the box. No other coach in the country would have come up with that genius move.

    Cut him some slack. They are a bit nervous about the game and are just acting out. We have always been polite hosts on this board and there's no reason to stop now. Don't let them get under your skin.

    shrug Just one of my pet peeves when guys from other fanbases come to our site and can't call Michigan by it's right name. We should at least be able to have a site where we don't hear things like scUM, Michigan University, etc...

  • I thought we were having a debate, I have not used any bad langueage, the worst I have done is call one guy knucklehead, the rest has been I feel a good debate between posters, if you are offended by me calling your school michigan university, well i apologize, I thought it was part of the banter, I figure if you can dish it (Ohio) then you can take it, I guess i was wrong about that. I would argue Mr. Woodson that Fickell was the co-coordinator at that time as well and deserves some of the credit with Heacock, just my opionion. I am not really nervous about a game in November, more excited and looking forward to it.

    If you want to call us that on Bucknuts or tBB that is fine. No problems from me then. This is a Michigan board that we want to remain free from that crap. That is all I am saying. If I was to go over to Bucknuts and use the Ohio thing it would not go over well.
