What? There was an open competition, and Denard beat out Tate. It wasn't a case of Tate doing stupid stuff; he started doing that more after he lost the starting job. RR even played Denard in spurts during his freshman season despite the fact that he did not completely understand the playbook yet. By the time spring ball rolled around, Denard had it down pat and won the job.

Eh, Tate was a mess for most of the summer leading up to the '10 season. He, Austin White and Jerald Robinson were quite the trio on campus. Missed several "voluntary" workouts and barely stayed eligible. Tate almost flunked his summer classes. That's why RR was forced to go with Gardner as the backup.
