B1G to add Maryland and Rutgers?

But I always considered Penn State an east coast school, and Nebraska isn't exactly Midwest either, IMHO. That ship has long ago sailed.

It's not about geography only, it's culture. Big Ten country is for the most part full of places where almost everyone has some association with one of the Big Ten schools in the state, be it by having attended, having had family and friends who attended or simply being a fan. And with the exception of the state of Indiana, football is king and always associated with the big state universities and state pride.

Penn State and Nebraska both brought that same vibe to the table. By the way if you ask people not from the Midwest, most of them would consider Nebraska part of it. (It's wrong but to people on the coasts, the Midwest is everything in-between the coasts and North of the Mason-Dixon).

Meanwhile Maryland and Rutgers are the sort of schools where after every other game there'll be a thread on their rarely visited football forum where someone goes "Why doesn't anyone care? Why are the students not into it?" etc. And it's not because the students there are academic geniuses, it's because football doesn't mean much to the people. And the university itself and its athletics overall mean less to the community. Those are pro sports towns and that extends to the student and alum bases even. That's just not the Big Ten and I honestly don't think these moves will do anything for the conference.

Thanks for stopping by. I think one thing that could happen quite quickly is the rise of Maryland football because of Under Armour, similar to the rise of Oregon because of Nike.

Thanks for having me. BTW, your interaction on our board today was great reading. As you can see, we are a cynical but fun bunch. It got me curious as to how you guys saw this on your end. I am not surprised and, as I said in my other post, can see where most Michigan fans are coming from on the outside. We may never get to your or Nebraska's level and we won't cheat like Meyer will at OSU, but I think we will surprise. First thing is first. We have a lot of frustration to lay out on Penn State and it is going to be really enjoyable to watch.

As for Plank, he doesn't have the kind of money Phil Knight does and is understandably more conservative with it. He is going all in with the shoe business as he understands that he can only go so far with apparel at this point. If UA shoes take off, his ability to give to the Athletic Dept. will benefit UMD tremendously. If not, his impact may not be anywhere near as great. So buy Under Armour shoes folks and help the newbies out.

See you guys down the road. I was at the Maryland/Michigan game in 1985 and look forward to coming back. In the meantime, stop by our board and get to know your new neighbors. We are a good bunch.

If the suggested divisions hold, we'll play them like every 5 years, so there won't be much of a vibe that they really are in our conference.

  • If/when we go to 16 what do you guy’s think of this scenario if we add GT and Miami

B1G North- UM, MSU, Wisconsin, Minnesota
B1G West- UNL, Iowa, NW, UI
B1G South- GT, OSU, IU, Purdue
B1G East- PSU, Miami, RU, UMD

Each team would have one cross divisional rivalry (for example UM- OSU), and 5 rotating opponent’s’. The two teams with the best records would play in the B1GCG. If the B1G went to this, “The Game” probably wouldn’t have to move because the possibility of a rematch would be less likely.

Probably better than what we have today. And it would be more of a 'conference' than the mess we are likely to have starting 2014.

Maryland guy checking in to perhaps get many of you to look at this from a different viewpoint from a football/basketball standpoint. Leaving nostalgia/tradition aside, which all of us understand from both ends, bringing us in is not anywhere near as bad as many of you are making it out to be.

Let's start with football. Are we Michigan? No, of course not, nor do we pretend to be. But there is a much greater football tradition at Maryland than many of you know. Only you guys, OSU, Penn St., Nebraska, and Iowa have won more bowl games among Big 10 teams. We have won 2 National Championships. We were the school that broke away from the Southern Conference and STARTED the ACC, a fact that those short sighted redneck, Bojangles eating fools in Greensboro have long since forgotten.

We were building a football powerhouse under Jerry Clairborne and Bobby Ross. Only twice from 1973 to 1985 did we win less than 8 games and one of those years (1979) we won 7. Then 2 terrible things happened; Len Bias died and, just as we were recovering from that, we hired Debbie Yow as Athletic Director.

She shoulders all the blame for the current financial state of our Athletic Department and much of the current state of our football program. Imagine if your Athletic Director spent millions and millions of dollars on non revenue generating sports and cut the budget for your football and basketball programs to the bare minimum for an 18 year period. Do you think you would have as great a football program as you do now? Indiana spends more money on its basketball program than she did for Maryland's football program. It's a miracle Ralph Friedgen won any games at all under her leadership. Her decision to go to N.C. State was a true gift from God.

Look, most of us are not thrilled about having Edsall as our coach. Yet, things are changing drastically with the program. Dr. Loh and our current AD Kevin Anderson understand the importance of football. This move to the Big 10, combined with the effort being put forth by Under Armor CEO Kevin Plank, will make our football program far more competitive in a relatively shorter period of time than most of you think. We have talent. Most of it is very young (we've started 12 true freshmen at various times this year, including 3 at QB [one of which is a Linebacker]). We had 4 QB's go down with injuries and have had to start a true freshman Linebacker at QB the last 4 games. Maryland, Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia is one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country and Edsall's hiring of Mike Locksley will keep many of those kids here.

As for basketball, I shouldn't have to explain it. If you think MD brings nothing to the table for hoops, you have a big surprise coming.

I only speak for myself, but most of us are thrilled with this move. We look forward to being a part of the Big 10 and I think many of you will quickly see that we will be a good fit from a competitive standpoint. I was hoping there would be a shuffle of divisions and we would get to see you guys more in football, but there is a deep hatred for Penn St here and it will not take very long for a disdain for OSU to set in. After all, Urban Meyer stole Noah Spence from us.

Cheers gentlemen. Good luck Saturday. cheers

welcome to both the B1G and Wolverine247. Thanks for sharing your insight into Maryland's tradition on the gridiron. If the Terps continue to improve their football program, that could be a nice boost for the conference as a whole.

We'd love to have you stick around here as much as you'd like, but please watch your language when you post.

  • Trying to figure out what Rutgers brings to the table. No one in NYC watches college football. They do have 10 of the top 26 markets in the US now though.

The Big Ten will now have:

    #1: New York City
    #3: Chicago
    #4: Philadelphia
    #9: Washington, D.C.
    #11: Detroit
    #15: Minneapolis
    #17: Cleveland
    #23: Pittsburgh
    #25: Indianapolis
    #26: Baltimore

I suppose the gamble is that Rutgers' profile is increased enough by being in the Big Ten that NYC starts to care, same with Maryland and the Baltimore/D.C. metro.

It might help with a few because both of those cities are like melting pots and that people are from all over the US.

There is so much to do in those cities though that football might not be on my mind on a Saturday as well.

Well they care about the Yankees and those guys are on like every other day from April through October. I think it's more cultural. Big cities where so many people are transplants will find it easier to go for pro sports because college sports tend to assume more of a connection to the area. It's easier rooting for a pro team in a new city for some guy from Kentucky or Iowa who moved to New York to advance his career than to adopt a local college he didn't attend and has like zero to do with.

I've known guys who moved to D.C. from all over to work in politics and they were Nats bandwagoners within a year, no way they'd ever do that for a college team.

  • @ Michmania:

    A few things to consider:
    - We might be able to reach as far as Boston which is 10th.
    - Delany is supposedly interested in capturing the Atlanta market (top 10 market) to give the B1G a southern presence. GTech is the name being thrown around.
    - I think Delany is trying to doing everything to force ND to join the B1G. That would solidify our presence in the NY media market. ND joined the ACC on the condition that the ACC would remain intact with its charter members plus new additions. If more schools (like FSU and Clemson) bolt for another conference, then ND will likely void its agreement with the ACC.

ND is a pipe dream, they won't join the Big Ten because (1) they don't like the conference and us in particular and (2) they don't think they have to. If they get into the BCS title game this year as a football independent, they will consider their situation fine for the future. If the ACC collapses (and it's still hardly a sure thing) they will just latch onto some other smaller conference to have their other sports while being an indepenent.

And Delany can't expand the Big Ten to 30 teams to gobble up every possible institution that might otherwise partner up with ND. The reality is we are at 14 now (assuming Rutgers joins which the media reports as certain) and 16 is the max and let's be real, at 16 you'd basically be two conferences who happen to host a "bowl" between the champs at the end. Even at 9 conference games, you'd play non-rival schools in the other division once every seven years. A Michigan coach may then have a reasonably long tenure and play Penn State once in it! Already at 14 we'll have a situation where we'll all be old men before we've even played 10 conference games against Rutgers and Maryland.

I'm right there with most of you in my dissappointment, but there may be larger things to consider.

There is an outstanding article/analysis of B1G Expansion on Mgoblog today that agrees with much of what you say. It seems Delany/B1G is playing the long game and assumingt Super Conferences are coming. By accepting Rutgers and Maryland the B1G almost assuredly destroys the Big East, gains huge tv markets and puts the squeeze on the ACC and the Big 12 to fight it out for the last spot of the 4 Super Conferences (SEC, PAC, B1G being the other 3).

    http://mgoblog.com/diaries/why-maryland-and-rutgers-and-whats-next

The author also does a nice breakdown on who the possible 15th and 16th teams will be and why tv markets will most likely be the determining factor. Anyway, all I can say is that now I understand. I wish we were adding Penn State and Nebraska quality schools to our conference, but I see why we are doing things this way and hope Maryland and Rutgers live up to our standards and expectations.

Welcome Terps and whatever Rutgers people call themselves, you got big shoes to fill.

I'm curious where the hatred for PSU comes from.

From a purely selfish standpoint, I'd be happy about Rutger's admittance into the B1G only because living in South Brunswick, NJ it'd be much easier for me to get to a Michigan game, even if it's once in a blue moon. Oh hey, Moon, is that how you came up with your screen name? Blue Moon?

What do you guys think about officially changing the name of the conference once we reach 16 to the Big Sixteen? Is the B1G logo supposed to be a move in that direction? What if the Big 12 reach 16 first and take that name?
