I mean people talk about academics and all that but the truth is that the conference has more in common with public universities on the Plains like Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa State and Kansas State than East Coast schools like Maryland or Rutgers. It's no surprise those schools make more basketball than football sense because the collegiate athletic culture on the East Coast is simply basketball-driven.

Basketball it's a great move - Maryland is a good to great program and Rutgers is OK, do we really need to complain about the Big Ten quality anyway? Recruiting it's a great move - tons of football and basketball talent in both areas. Academically it's a great move - both AAU and ranked in the top 60. Football is at worst free wins for the top 6ish (UM, OSU, PSU, Neb, Wisc, 6th team dujour), at best it's 2 programs that have never been in a real football league that can put it together with exposure and resources. Rutgers has been a top-25 team in the last 10 years more times than half of the Big Ten members and Maryland has a lot of talent and opportunity to be an "Oregon of the East" with the Under Armour money. Maryland isn't a bad school; 9 years ago they were a premier ACC program getting national attention. They have a national title in their history. I think they can be similar to Iowa or Wisconsin when they put it together.
Also - Fox owns 49% of the BTN so they want to see it do well. They are also likely buying the YES Network (Yankees & Nets games). They can tell cable companies they only get Yes if they add BTN, similar to ESPN does with ESPN2 and their other channels. It will get carriage in the Maryland and Rutgers footprints and everyone in the Big Ten gets a lot of money - then maybe schools like Purdue can pay for alum Kevin Sumlin instead of snake oil aficionados with mustaches like Danny Hope or Illinois won't have to hire guys that make Ron Zook look smart.

If expansion to 4 16-team superconferences is coming, the ACC is the conference that's gonna get gutted. Looked for a little while like it would be the Big 12, but they've solidified. I think there are enough life rafts for all but 4 ACC schools...once everyone in the ACC figures that out, there's going to be a mad scramble for them because no one is going to want to be left onboard. There are reports that the B1G is talking to Georgia Tech and FSU, the Big 12 has been talking to FSU and Clemson for a long time...as soon as one of those schools leaves, I think the writing will be on the wall and the rest of conference realignment could happen very quickly.

This is a great move. Too many of you are looking at this from a sport/competitive standpoint. I'll agree that this does not do a lot fo strength of schedule. BUT the most important thing to long term sustainability is money. We just added two HUGE tv markets. HUGE. The Big 10 network is going to make bank on this deal and each school is going to benefit.
Hats off to Delany. This is a great move.

Maryland guy checking in to perhaps get many of you to look at this from a different viewpoint from a football/basketball standpoint. Leaving nostalgia/tradition aside, which all of us understand from both ends, bringing us in is not anywhere near as bad as many of you are making it out to be.
Let's start with football. Are we Michigan? No, of course not, nor do we pretend to be. But there is a much greater football tradition at Maryland than many of you know. Only you guys, OSU, Penn St., Nebraska, and Iowa have won more bowl games among Big 10 teams. We have won 2 National Championships. We were the school that broke away from the Southern Conference and STARTED the ACC, a fact that those short sighted redneck, Bojangles eating fools in Greensboro have long since forgotten.
We were building a football powerhouse under Jerry Clairborne and Bobby Ross. Only twice from 1973 to 1985 did we win less than 8 games and one of those years (1979) we won 7. Then 2 terrible things happened; Len Bias died and, just as we were recovering from that, we hired Debbie Yow as Athletic Director.
She shoulders all the blame for the current financial state of our Athletic Department and much of the current state of our football program. Imagine if your Athletic Director spent millions and millions of dollars on non revenue generating sports and cut the budget for your football and basketball programs to the bare minimum for an 18 year period. Do you think you would have as great a football program as you do now? Indiana spends more money on its basketball program than she did for Maryland's football program. It's a miracle Ralph Friedgen won any games at all under her leadership. Her decision to go to N.C. State was a true gift from God.
Look, most of us are not thrilled about having Edsall as our coach. Yet, things are changing drastically with the program. Dr. Loh and our current AD Kevin Anderson understand the importance of football. This move to the Big 10, combined with the effort being put forth by Under Armor CEO Kevin Plank, will make our football program far more competitive in a relatively shorter period of time than most of you think. We have talent. Most of it is very young (we've started 12 true freshmen at various times this year, including 3 at QB [one of which is a Linebacker]). We had 4 QB's go down with injuries and have had to start a true freshman Linebacker at QB the last 4 games. Maryland, Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia is one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country and Edsall's hiring of Mike Locksley will keep many of those kids here.
As for basketball, I shouldn't have to explain it. If you think MD brings nothing to the table for hoops, you have a big surprise coming.
I only speak for myself, but most of us are thrilled with this move. We look forward to being a part of the Big 10 and I think many of you will quickly see that we will be a good fit from a competitive standpoint. I was hoping there would be a shuffle of divisions and we would get to see you guys more in football, but there is a deep hatred for Penn St here and it will not take very long for a disdain for OSU to set in. After all, Urban Meyer stole Noah Spence from us.

Thanks for stopping by. I think one thing that could happen quite quickly is the rise of Maryland football because of Under Armour, similar to the rise of Oregon because of Nike.
