B1G to add Maryland and Rutgers?

  • oral_terpitude said...

That's putting it a touch lightly. We invented Midnight Madness for goshsakes.

Nah, we don't want Maryland, go to the Big East please.

  • What I don't get is that we basically turned down Missouri who are a much better fit than either Rutgers or Maryland. Hell, even a Missouri/Kansas package deal would have been a better fit along with Nebraska. Most people elsewhere can't tell the Midwest and the Plains apart anyway, may as well do a Midwest/Plains conference.

But Maryland and Rutgers would basically be shameless TV market grabs and not even clever ones because nobody in D.C. or New York really cares about those schools' college football teams.

I'll take Rutgers if we get rid of Indiana

Heck no. Indiana is a great member of the B1G.

  • I'd like to know who ESPN's source is. This could just be a made up story by them. The B1G just recently said they had no plans for further expansion. If they added any teams I'd like Rutgers, VTech, or even Syracuse over Maryland.

I don't know who ESPN's source is, but they are not the only outlet reporting it. The Washington Post has picked up the story, as have several other outlets including Yahoo Sports. It seems pretty legitimate. I don't like the Maryland addition at all. I think Rutgers is an okay (not great) fit. Honestly, the 12 team setup the B1G currently has is pretty much perfect. There's just no need to screw with it...but when there's money involved I guess common sense has no place in business.

ESPN has created who news cycles in the past just for headlines. Other media outlets have followed along with what ESPN has done in the past. Guess we will find out later on in the week weather it is a made up rumor or true. I agree I like the 12 we have now.

  • The B1G should just go all in and add ND and Texas.

Buckeye here.....just checking out your board for game week, and I am glad to see that we agree about this horrible, stupid, idiotic idea.

I have ZERO interest in adding MD and "rutgers".........I can't even say "rutgers" and "football" together without laughing a little.

As much as I detest your school in our rivalry, I would freely acknowledge the proud tradition you bring to the conference. That's part of the rivalry.

Maryland and "rutgers"....have NO such tradition...they would be 2 more wins for us annually.....an all around horrible idea.

The only 2 teams that seem to be good additions are those mentioned above....Texas, although not mid-western, is a good school and decent competition. The Domers are a logical choice, but they don't want to share their cash and are tired of getting their clocks cleaned in the Big Ten.

Here's to a good, clean, hard-hitting game this week.

Totally, 100% agree. I liked the idea of Missouri, even when Nebraska was being considered.

And hell, if we are going to 16, I much prefer Missouri, Kansas/KSU or Okla/OSU.

Or if we must go east, Rutgers is marginal but fine...but how is Maryland better than Syracuse, for example? Hell, I think Cuse has more play in NYC than Rutgers, or it may be close.

Ugh..the whole thinking process makes me insane.

Syracuse owns the state for basketball, and actually much of New England.

They are definitely on the rise and the Rochester area tends to produce a few top players every year, so if they can keep the talent in state, they could become a top team in football in addition to being a top team in basketball.

I've always wondered why there isn't more football talent in New York, just doesn't make any sense with the population in the major cities. That said, the New York State Athletic Association needs major reform.

I think all of those athletes go the basketball route. The ESPN100 has a good amount of New Yorkers on the list.

Don't be surprised if we take Syracuse too. If the B10 has decided to go to 14, my guess is they will go all the way to 16 and Syracuse is probably very high on the list. Assuming UT and ND are off the table, I could see the B10 adding any four of MD, SYR, UVA, VT, RUT, GT, PITT, NCST, UNC, DUK and MIA.

Yes. One thing to remember is Delany isn't stupid. This move is with an eye to the future. As another post said above, super conferences are coming - maybe staying pat isn't the way to go.

SEC has the southeast. Texas will join the Pac12 and form a southwest power. If the B1G wants to compete, it needs the talent, population(TV sets) of the northeast. The rest will be minor leagues or subconferences, whatever you want to call 'em.

An added bonus is this move sends a royal eff you up ND's butt.

    Nutcracker

  • I don't see how adding Maryland and Rutgers sends an eff you up anyone's butt, but fans of current Big 10 teams.

ND was getting cozy with the ACC after playing hard-to-get with the B1G. Taking Maryland, a charter member of the ACC weakens them and puts them in scramble mode to fill the spot. My guess is they'll have to jump again in a few years and join the Pac12 eventually.

    Nutcracker

  • The point is, Delany wants to put the B1G in a better position to win national championships. He can't do that if the B1G isn't on equal footing with the SEC. He needs more power to secure more auto-qualifying teams, and the B1G teams need a larger recruiting base to better compete on the field. Well, at least that's what I hope he's thinking.

  • Apparently Georgia Tech is in the mix too. I would definitely prefer them over Maryland. Big academic and football tradition, and adding Atlanta would be a coup.

Georgia Tech could also be in mix for Big Ten, report indicates

Yellow Jackets also would face $50 million exit fee

Georgia Tech would be a million times better than Maryland or Rutgers. Adding downtown Atlanta to our recruiting map would be amazing.

Although we're never good at defending that damn option.

Georgia Tech would be a great pick up for the B1G.
