B1G Tourney: Michigan vs. Wisconsin Open Thread

I'll save u the time. Duke and Indly will play for the NC with Duke wining it all. No one will be able to match up with Dukes line up of Mason Plumlee and Ryan Kelly.

you're probably right, however, in hoops you just gotta get hot for a couple big games and you're right in it...

not saying um (or osu either) will be that team, but anybody in the top 15 (or so) can go all the way...

you refer to duke and indy but look who they lost to...

i do agree that teams like duke and indy are less likely to sleep on anyone in the tourney because when you lose you're out, but teams like um and osu fight harder knowing the same possible outcome is at stake...

the big ten was brutal this year and i suspect our teams will make a lot of noise in the coming weeks...

msu has a very solid team with a coach who seems to have a knack for winning in march...

i see msu going very far in the tourney...

  • I don't know how anyone can have optimism about our team at this point. I'm still not in favor of putting this on Beilein, I'm more convinced it's our players who are underperforming, but there are no signs pointing towards this team making a tourney run. Is it out of the realm of possibility? Absolutely not. However, after the way we've played this past month, I see nothing that indicates we're poised to make noise in the tourney (and I'm usually one of the last people to shift to pessimism)

I still think we will make the sweet 16 with relative ease, but from that point going forward, every game is going to be a dogfight. If our squad comes out like they did today, we will get blown out.

Also, if we get knocked out in one of the first two rounds, I will concede and transfer the primary blame to our coaches.

You guys realize that if we change the outcome of 2 specific shots this season - a half-courter that went in and a tip-in that didn't - we'd be the B1G champions and in contention for a #1 overall seed, right? And that this is still the same team that started the year 20-1? Yeah the team is spotty and inconsistent, but it's also capable of greatness. We have as much talent in anyone in the country. Nothing is guaranteed, and obviously 3 seeds lose early all the time, but pretending like we "can't" go on a run and saying things like you're not even going to bother watching the tournament, or that you "hate" this team, is simply ridiculous. Amazing how quickly fans can get spoiled. A lot of you are 10-20 years older than me and actually attended Michigan when the basketball teams were *actually* bad and no one gave two shits about them even in Ann Arbor...and now you're whining about this team? Puh-lease.

This is the same roster that started the year 20-1 but make no mistake, it is not the same team.

  • I didn't see the game today (due to work) but I didn't expect a win. Honestly, Wisconsin is a tough foe at the best of times and playing on less than 24 hours rest against a very well rested Wisconsin didn't exactly seem very promising. Quite frankly, if we had won this, we would have played Indiana and probably lost again to them and we'd maybe be seeded one seed higher but I'm not sure if that really is going to be a huge difference in the end.

The reality is we never should have had to play yesterday - this is the best Michigan team in almost 20 years and we can't even get a bye for the first round of the Big Ten tournament? Obviously that game yesterday was a self-inflicted wound and as a result so was today's loss.

Best thing we can do is view the NCAAs as a new season, everyone starts at 0-0, clean slate.

I don't know man. Were just so inconsistent and not even from game to game but like half to half. This is kind of expected with all the freshman we play. We have some talented kids in McGary, Robinson, and Stauskas but they still have a ton of developing to do. You just never know what you are going to get from those guys on a game by game basis. I guess what i am saying is I am not so sure we are really underperforming but instead that maybe the 20-1 start put some unrealistic expectations on this team.

I do agree that we can make the sweet 16 and then from there Trey and Tim have to play well every game for us to have a chance to win.

  • If we play well, we can achieve anything.

The problem is, we haven't played well for about 2 months.

12 games ago this team hit a wall. They have not recovered, and the NCAAs will not make a difference. They are not the same team, as the freshman have not all elevate their game, Hardaway has been inconsistent, and Morgan does not seem the same. Michigan will be lucky to make the Sweet 16. I think out in the 2nd round. No fire. No spunk on a consistent level.

You know that is true to some extent but then this team *did* beat MSU fairly recently and let's face it, should have beaten Indiana (Burke and Hardaway, neither one a freshman, just had to hit FTs). Those teams are good, *really* good, there aren't many better ones out there.

This team is not as good as we thought when they were the #1 team in the country, but is it the best Beilein team? Pretty easily so. Better than any of Amaker's? Hell yeah. I think this team could be upset on the first weekend, you'd have to be naive not to realise that. But at the same time, it could also get to the 2nd weekend and win a game there. Who knows what is possible?

I think this team has come down to earth, but also I think it's been a question of matchups. A lot will depend on those.

I hear you. But, comparing their ability to win on balls that 'should have fallen' is not realistic. This team was blowing past teams early in the season. I doubt they beat. KSU at this point, with a Pitt giving them a run. So what changed. The reasons I said originally. The team lost its mojo. They seem to play at a high level when the swagger can rule and they can run the ball. Once competition got tougher, and losses started, the mojo was lost. Nobody elevated the game outside of Burke.

Duke with Ryan Kelly seems like the only borderline unbeatable team. The Blue Devils are undefeated when he has played a game.

    Welp.

Duke is no longer undefeated even with Ryan Kelly.

Maybe I jinxed Duke. The entire team shot poorly from beyond the arc (4-25 for 16%).

Ryan Kelly, in particular, went 0-6 from 3.

MSU down by 10 at half. Iowa looking good for next year.
