Austin Hatch

  • I know this might not be worthy of it's own thread but I would really like to know more about Austin Hatch. I know everything that has happened to him with his accident, but how has he progressed athletically?

    Did he play this year?
    What were his stats like?
Do we think he will be able to play BB at UofM?

The coaches gave him a early offer so he clearly has/had game before the tragic accident that happened to him and his family.

It would be really cool if Steve or Mark could talk to him and see how he is doing.

I just read the other day that he hasn't played live competitive ball yet. I know he has been cleared to like get out on the court and shoot.

  • From January of this year.

Michigan recruit Austin Hatch inching closer to return, still holds lofty goals for the future

Hatch gets clearance to fully participate in practice, except for full-court 5 on 5 drills. In a recent radio interview, his high school coach says that Hatch still holds two primary goals: To play basketball at the University of Michigan and to become a doctor.

  • I know he's working hard to come back. He hasn't come back to live play yet. From reports I've seen on other sites, it's grim that he'll ever get to play at Michigan. I'm sure they'll honor his scholarship, though.

I swear to God just reading that brings tears to my eyes. For those of you that know his whole story .. can you even begin to imagine what he's gone through? And to still want to play basketball at Michigan .. that tells me all I need to know about the kid. And then it goes on to mention that he wants to be a doctor?

Hats off to Austin. I'm rooting for him every single day.

  • just reading the article above, man it's still so amazing how great this kid is. i really hope it all works out for him!

If he can't play I don't think it will effect the BB scholarship numbers. There is away around that but I'm not sure how it works. I know when I played football at Ohio University when guys had career ending injures they still could go to school and have it paid for and it didn't hurt the 85 limit.

  • Mark knows him well or has a good source.

Really excited for Austin to be at UM even if he never plays.

I'd be willing to bet he definitely suits up .. and as for playing .. even if he's not back to the old player he once was .. I'm pretty sure they'll find a way to get him some minutes.

  • I talk with Austin occasionally, but as I've mentioned before, he wants to keep everything off the record. His family would like to have his recovery process private, so they have PR people that keep Austin from doing formal interviews and such. I'm not sure when exactly he will be cleared to play competitive basketball, but I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up playing in an AAU game or two this year although that is strictly my opinion.

  • From what I've heard/read, he's yet to play in a game yet. He's been practicing but yet to do anything 5 on 5. It's still up in the air on whether he will play or not ever, and obviously we're all hoping he does. If he doesn't though, he'll get his medical hardship.

Well Michigan could just give him an academic scholarship rather than an athletic scholarship.

Whats the reason he cant play yet? Not 100% from injuries, and which injury(ies) are they?

I'd assume its his brain injuries that are holding him back from playing right now.

    Mark-

Whenever Austin decides to go "on the record" ...im sure I can speak for every Michigan fan here & everywhere: We'd love to hear something from him. Such an emotional story, I cant help but shed tears every time I read anything about him.

Obviously: we want a basketball interview & nothing too personal. Maybe after his return to game action would be a good time. No pressure- I just always love reading about this remarkable young man.
