Amedeo Della Valle no longer being recruited by Michigan

  • So according to his twitter, Michigan is no longer recruiting him. I saw this on UMhoops.com and saw that it wasn't posted here yet. ADV said "So Michigan STOPPED recruiting me today? That’s really fair !!! WoW !!" on his twitter last night. If he really wanted to play here he should have visited before spike commited, and also before burke was going to make his decision. I'm happy about this, I didn't think that we needed another combo 2 guard this class. We can bank that scholarship and use it on someone who is better in the future.

  • From what I've heard, he's going to Zona.

  • He seemed kind of upset about it. I think we had a chance with him, but Beilein clearly made his choice.

The coaches make the decisions and live with them, but I'm a little surprised by the move. They thought he was good enough to go fly out there to see him and get a visit to Ann Arbor in the works. Now he's not good enough to use one of our 2 open scholarships on?

For argument's sake, let's assume Burke and Hardaway go pro after next year. We are then in the opposite position we were last year where we are forward-heavy on the roster. We'd have Spike and Stauskus as the only experience guards with Derrick Walton and likely somebody else coming in as a true freshman. Carlton Brundidge dominated his junior year and then took a step back his senior year and obviously didn't pan out this year for Michigan, so who's to say Walton will continue to get better and be ready to take over the reins? Spike was a kid a lot of people didn't want, but we assume he'll be a solid D1 PG by his sophomore year?

I'd much rather have the competition by adding Della Valle and another 2013 recruit, but maybe the coaches have another plan (Monte Morris? Bo Zeigler?) to get more depth by the 2013 season.

I am ok either way on this. If Burke and Hardaway both leave after this year that leaves Spike, Robinson III and Stauskas returning at the guard spots and Walton, Irvin and possibly Hatch coming in.

Also, Monte Morris is playing on the same AAU squad as Walton this summer and i could see the coaches wanting to see how that pans out with them in the same backcourt at the same time. If it works well I would expect Michigan to go after Morris pretty hard.

Exactly, this is on him. It's a hard lesson for a teenager to learn, but when opportunity presents itself, you have to seize it; however, plain and simple, Della Valle didn't do enough research and got beat by someone who did.

If he wanted the to play here badly enough, he would have:

    1) Educated himself on our program (including: scholarship numbers, who the other recruits at guard were, and what their time tables were)

    2) Knew the urgency, and moved up his timetable, so he could include Michigan in the decision-making process

    3) Booked a flight with his parents or coach to Detroit Metro on the Friday night after his season ended and visited Ann Arbor.

    4) If Spike Albrecht still beat him to the punch, Della Valle would probably still have a scholarship offer because he showed serious interest.

Complaining after the fact isn't going to do anything. Personally, I hope he comes to an understanding of what happened and learns from it.

  • This is a prime example of why 247sports and other similar sites are so critical to parents of recruits, recruits, and their coaches.

If Della Valle, his parents, or coach had followed what was happening at Michigan, we wouldn't have ran out of scholarships before he had made his decision.
