The article said he has a 100% in the class with a week or two left... He could probably not show up and still get a B in the class lol

Probably gets a 100% just by showing up.

Do I think UM beats them like a drum this year? Yes.

What's changed from UM's side that makes you think that?

    Just curious

Nothing. Thats the point. All but center and defensive tackle will be filled with a more talented version this year who has been through the program for a year.

Its also at Michigan, and MSU is replacing some important parts of its offense.

That said, I don't think that either team will be beat like a drum.

I see where you're coming from- just don't see why you'd expect an improvement from Denard when he's been bottled up both years as a starter vs MSU

Good point on home field- I expect AA to be rocking.

MSU is losing parts of the offense-but by the 8th game, they should be far enough along

Should be a good game either way

Denard wasn't exactly bottled up in 2010. He had 300 yards of total offense. It was the INTs that killed him in that game and he can absolutely get better in that regard.

While I don't think UM beats MSU "like a drum" this year. I do think we'll win... main reasons are the obvious ones. We're at home, hopefully it won't be in a Trash Tornado, and our team will be entering our second year with our head coach, and almost more importantly our Coordinators.

We could easily lose the game still... I give MSU far far more credit for being a good team than it seems most of my fellow Michigan fans do. The only line of thought I really remember from the game last year was "Even though the game is close right now... it feels like MSU has been pretty superior" Re-watching the game a few weeks ago for the first time and there really was no question about it... MSU was beating our ass that game.

Solid points- think home field will be a big factor

If Denard can take that next step, it'll be a tough game for sure

Sure, guess I was speaking more from a rushing standpoint

Yeah the MSU D did a decent job in 2010 in stopping his run game. He was just over 4 yards a carry. Personally, I think the best thing Michigan could do to help Denard out in that regard is get the RBs more involved running the football. In the last 2 games, the RBs for Michigan have had decent yards per carry averages but not nearly enough carries.

Agree.. was very surprised Borges went away from that LY

I'd assume you'd see Fitz get more involved this year, which will only improve UM's chances

About the only i got for that first question is the difference between being seven games into a system and 20 games into a system.

Denard didn't play that well last year, but the playbook was far from settled and the game plan was really what hurt.

Unless it goes into overtime, I don't expect it to be a particularly high scoring game, and I think it will be an excellent game.

There is a danger in just looking at the stats and reaching that conclusion though.

For example, last year Smith had 8 carries for 37 yards...a 4.6 average.

But, one of the rushes was for 26 yards.

Subtract that out and you get 7 carries for 11 yards...not, so impressive.

Fitz Toussaint had 2 carries for 7 yards. I think you can expect to see him a lot more this year.

Yeah but if a RB is going to break a big one every 8 carries then just imagine how many rushing yards they would have after 25 carries or so. Would make for quite a threat to accompany Denard now wouldn't it.

I believe he had one carry for 98, and one for -91, so not all that impressive when you break it down. (Unlike me, I'm always impressive when I break it down).

Not sure you can define 26 yards as "a big one".

To further illustrate...Smith's first 2 carries were 9 and 26 yards (in the first drive).

After that he had 6 carries for 2 yards.

His 3rd carry was for 3 yards (also in the first drive)...so, after that he had 5 carries for -1 yards.

Did MSU make adjustments after the first drive? It appears that way. As you watched the game, did you think that it would make sense to give him the ball more? On the hope that he could bust a 26 yarder?

I absolutely felt like they should have given the ball to the RBs more. It wasn't in hopes that he could bust another 26 yarder but more in the fact you need to keep the defense honest. The MSU D could just focus on Denard.

Not to mention you are focusing on 1 year. In my original post i mentioned the last 2 years. Our RBs had good averages in 2010 as well without getting enough carries.

Yea, in 2010, the D focused on Denard first and RB's 2nd.. which is one of the reason the RBs had such a good rush average.. it was pointed out they wanted to make sure Denard didn't burn them in the run game, make UM drive a full field with handoffs and throws in hopes he'll make a mistake.

Gameplan was executed perfectly as that's exactly what happened

"We contained him," defensive tackle Kevin Pickelman said. "We knew he couldn't throw the ball."

  • Blah blah blah. But i can. Breaking off a couple 26 yard runs will make the defense have to respect the RB. Michigan gave up way to early on the RBs last year.
