A great time to be a UM fan?

  • Obviously, it is easy to be a fan when you win every game. Bandwagon fans are welcome, but they never enjoy the way an uptick can elevate your emotions. (It is all relative to what you experience).

It is clear that Michigan is a better team from last year. They have an almost as good offense and a much better defense. Coach Hoke and co. have also handled the losses well and kept the bottom from falling out. I think that the inability to deal with the stress of a high profile gig and the emotional attacks is what "did in" RichRod's teams to a large degree (and also seem certain to doom Brian Kelly's teams).

Anyway, Michigan seems poised to continue to perform much better this year.

That is a very good thing in a DRASTIC transition year.

Plus, UM has top level recruits lining up to be part of the future. That is something that a "name brand" program will always enjoy and helps keep "down times" shorter and more prone to reversal.

So, the future looks bright. Combine that with the fact that Michigan 3 biggest rivals have serious issues to deal with and the future looks even brighter.

MSU: Their success is very new (losing record two years ago) and they keep bumping their head on their ceiling. Most of their best recent wins have come over a down UM program. They can't win a big game on the road...or keep the score close. And, they will never recruit like a national powerhouse with UM in the same state.

ND: Kelly seems to be cracking under the pressure. He does not seem to have the emotional intelligence needed to guide young men under the intense scrutiny at ND.

OSU: Obviously they have coaching issues and sanction issues which MAY set them back a bit (and have already on the recruiting trail)>

  • Biggest issue I have with bandwagon fans is that they always seem to be the first to complain when things aren't going well.

  • I think it is a great year to be a fan. I think, especially on defense, the coaches have shown the ability that when they are able to get a full system of their players that they should succeed.

That being said, also look at the other sports.

Basketball should be a team that makes the NCAA tournament this year and if THJ stays then combining him McGary and Burke next year could be amazing.

Also look at hockey. The team is playing really well this year, and has another great recruiting class in the pipeline.

The next couple years might have some rough patches but everything is looking up and I am happy to be a fan right now.

  • Is it ever not a good time to be a UM fan?

Seriously, we're fans of THE most storied programs in college football and college hockey, and a historical contender in basketball. Our athletes and coaches are some of the most highly respected character guys who are always class acts and carry themselves with pride and poise after their years at the University of Michigan. Our university is consistently one of the top universities in the entire world, and all of us represent that school well by cheering each and every Saturday.

Very excited for the future in all the sports, including women's softball, volleyball, gymnastics. I love the Maize and Blue. Hopefully my son's acceptance letter is in the works and he'll get a chance to experience the love of our great university just like my wife and I have been able to do.

MSU isn't a very good football program.. takes year of consistent winning to get to that level. - copemoney 1/22/13

Thanks. I figured I would go with facts about MSU that any non-MSU fan could agree on: 1. recently bad, 2. not many good wins, 3. blown out on the road against good teams, and 4. not recruiting at a national level.

  • The key to success for both UM/MSU is to get players out of Ohio. Huge pipeline of talent that's been held on to by OSU.

  • The thing about being a real fan is that when Michigan does finally win that 12th football national championship, it will feel the most gratifying to you. I know I'll cry tears of joy because, lets face it, NCs don't come around very often here. And honestly, who here can say they witnessed Michigan win their last national championship before 1997? (1948 if you didn't know automatically).

I'm sure I will be like that too when basketball eventually gets back to the top and when hockey can capture #10. That's just the kind of person I am. My username isn't just MichiganDevotee for nothing. I'm very excited for all sports.

    1. And UM hasn't been bad recently? You use that as a positive for UM but a negative for MSU.
    2. We've won three straight against Wisconsin, four straight over UM, and have wins over PSU, ND, and OSU the past two seasons.
    3. We beat OSU at the shoe this year and won at Penn State, at NW (w/ Persa), and at UM last season. Also, way to ignore the fact that we haven't lost at home since 2009.
    4. Gholston, Bullough, LT, Burbridge, and Pittman beg to differ.

If we went over to tRCMB every time you guys mentioned Michigan, we'd post there more than MSU posters. You don't have to defend MSU every time we talk about you. We don't like MSU, so we'll probably make fun of it. It'll be ok.

Did you go to MSU or any college?

You failed to dispute any of my points.

    I said:
    1. recently bad

    You:
    Do not dispute that.

    I said:
    2. not many good wins,

    You:
We beat one or two teams other than UM that will finish the year ranked. In other words, not many good teams. (I know you didn't mean to say that a big name program is really the same as a good team regardless of how they perform on the field. That would be very anti-Sparty fan themes.)

    I said:

    3. blown out on the road against good teams,

    You:
Point to no good teams that Sparty has even hung with on the road. Once again, just "name" programs that did not have good teams at the time they played Sparty (as proven by their lack of year end ranking after playing a bunch of teams).

    I said:

    4. not recruiting at a national level.

    You:
Point to a small handful of players over three years that came from the midwest. It's almost as though you are unable to meet the point head-on.

You can try to avoid the points I raised or come up with counter-points that miss the mark, but that facts remain.

As I said, almost any college football fan with no connection to UM/MSU would agree with those facts.

Hey, I started this thread and I am just defending it from an ignorant Spartan fan. If he should not post here and it bothers you, then tell the mods. (I personally have no problem making State fans look dumb.)

Anyway, the facts remain that the future looks really bright for UM, while our rivals pose no real danger to the brightness of that future. It is a time of opportunity going forward. Michigan slipped down and is getting back up to battle with teams who have not really improved even though they have been able to beat flailing UM teams.
