3rd and 17.....

  • The last three weeks, it appears 3rd and 17 is our game-changing down.

    - Minnesota game in the 2nd quarter, Michigan offense doing nothing, down 7-0, and Gardner does the yakety-saks on 3rd and 17 finding Dileo wide open for a 47 yard touchdown. Never looked back from that point and won the game,
    - Northwestern up 24-14 late in the 3rd quarter, Michigan was on their own 15 yard line looking at 3rd and 17. Gardner underthrows a long pass to Roundtree and gets a pass interference call extending the drive. He then hits Gallon for 42 yards, then Fitz for a 28 yard touchdown. Momentum changed as Michigan closed the gap to 3 instead of having to punt from deep in their own territory.
    - Iowa offense marches down the field for a TD and has Michigan stopped on 3rd and 17 with the game tied 7-7. Looking at a 54 yard field goal, Gardner hits Roundtree wide open for a 37 yard TD. Demoralizing to the Iowa D and energizes Michigan to hold Iowa to a FG before Scoring another TD.

Pretty crazy that 3 weeks in a row we have had a major 3rd and 17 conversion that could be considered a game-changer...

Great point here. Didn't remember that the exact yardage was 17 on each one, but those were certainly huge plays that went in Michigan's favor in each game.

  • I think to start each possession, we should automatically lose 7 combined yards on first and second down to get the defense right where we want them....3rd and 17
