Tremendous: I know you're not seriously looking into schools or setting groups right now, but you are getting a lot of attention from a lot of schools. Have you started to set any kind of criteria as far as what you are looking for in a school?

Da'Shawn: I just figured out what I want to major in. I want to major in petroleum engineering and I think I want to minor in business. I want a good education. If I don't make it into the pros, I want to put myself into a position where I am making money like I'm in the pros. I'm looking right now into which schools have a program that fits my interest, but I've mostly been focusing my time on football; working out, talking with my coaches and hanging out with my teammates. Spring practice is coming up soon and I'm getting ready for the Nike combine in Baltimore soon as well.

If Hand is being completely honest, then...$^&@^$#$@...Michigan has more than a chance!

Can you elaborate more on pursuing petroleum engineering at Michigan, and why its the ish? Would this be similar to chemical engineering?

Michigan does not have a Petroleum Engineering school/offer it as a major. It would be most similar to Chemical Engineering for UMich undergrad, and Michigan does have several professors doing some very good/important research in petroleum engineering. But I'd assume most of that research is grad-level and above.

  • To echo what others have said, petroleum engineering is a subfield of chemical engineering.

But what's really exciting for me is that he also wants to do business. If he has the grades, he can get into Ross undergrad.

I think Hand wants to combine the two which is actually a smart path.

A smart path for sure; but nearly unfeasible for him. As a recent UM Engineering grad, there were only a handful of kids in my program (IOE) that were able to complete both an undergrad engineering and business degree - there are essentially no shared requirements. To try to accomplish that whilst playing football sounds impossible to me.

I'm actually of the opinion that we have very little chance for football players who want to study Engineering. The curriculum is very demanding and there is almost no class flexibility - a class you need to advance is often offered only once per year with 1 day/time option. There's also the logistical complication of North Campus. The bus ride from North Campus to South Campus (athletic facilities) is ~45 minutes during the day. I find it hard to imagine an athlete being able to meet the rigors of being an All-B1G caliber football player and completing an engineering degree.

I agree with all of this. My hope is that the Michigan advisers would come up with a *detailed* 4 year plan for Hand which the coaches can pitch to him. After all, Hand isn't any ordinary football recruit.

Moreover, I think that Hand should aim for a MBA from Ross which is much more valuable than an undergrad degree from Ross.

bad question, the question is how many other programs offered kids immediately after we did?

I could care less about that. Love UM's recruiting philosophy. Lot easier to recruit a year ahead when you have most of your class on lock so early.

  • Braden Smooth looks really quick for a lineman.

And I just looked at his photos on his 247sports profile. He has an awesome frame to add weight/muscle.
