2014 Recruiting Thread (Updated 06.07.2013)

  • Just curious. Say that you are Malik McDowell(or his father). What schools would you consider other than Michigan? More specifically, which schools would you consider for the reason being a "national" school? I can think of Alabama, LSU, USC. Perhaps ND and OSU to a lesser degree, though they are helped by their proximity. Would you consider Texas, OU, Oregon, or Georgia?

    EDIT: I forgot Florida.

Malik has said LSU and Bama. Me personally probably i would want an offer from Stanford/FSU/Oregon.

I think you would consider all of those, plus Stanford, but it seems you would really need to have a good reason to pass up UM and go somewhere else. Maybe you just click with another coaching staff. Or maybe you get into Stanford and decide a diploma from Stanford is worth it to go so far away. But other than that, what is the rationale of picking any other school than UM? We are no longer running a 3-3-5 base defense or a spread offense, which scared off many kids. And we now have one of the best staffs in the country on both sides of the ball. The only school I could really see being a threat is Alabama. Two MNCs and a Heisman in the last three years is hard to argue against. But Bama doesn't come close to UM on the academic side and Kirby Smart has one foot out the door, so you might not even know who your DC or position coach will be by the time you walk on campus. In comparison, neither Hoke or Mattison are going anywhere. IMO, Michigan is in the best situation recruiting-wise we have been in a decade.

  • Oh, I definitely agree a Michigan kid passing up UM would be a head scratcher. But I was just wondering, if we would eliminate location for a second, where would Michigan rank on the national scale. Instead of Malik, say that you're a 5 star prospect and you followed your dad serving in the military around Europe and don't have any ties whatsoever. And you just started looking at schools instead of narrowing down. I'd start off by considering,

    Tier 1: Bama, LSU, USC
Tier 2: Michigan, ND, OSU, Florida, Oregon, Stanford

The rest you probably wouldn't go if you didn't have significant ties to the region. And I have a feeling I'll move up Michigan in a few years.

Texas and Oklahoma are probably in tier 1. Both schools have had amazing recruiting classes for years and the on-field success to match it. Aside from Texas' slip ups the last 2 years. Oklahoma has been to a BCS bowl game in 8 of the last 10 years. Ridiculous.

You never know, but I'm skeptical as well. We have limited success getting guys from SC. I think the last guy we got was Q Washington.

  • Check out this video of '14 LB Clifton Garrett from Illinois. Michigan has showed initial interest. With 6 (7 with Levenberry) LB commits the past 2 recruiting cycles, the limited LB spots we have available for '14 will be for elite LB prospects. I think this kid will help us forget about Dorian O'Daniel. The first couple highlights remind me of Adam Sandler in Waterboy. roflmao

    Wow. Great find.

He seems to have Su'a Cravens-like anticipation ability.

But frankly, I just don't understand what the coaches will do with so many LBs. Mattison has supposedly come out and said that we're not going to run the 3-4 (at least not as the primary base defense).

ETA: I just learned that he works out at Core 6. I know people talk about pipelines to high schools...but what do posters here think about Michigan developing a strong connection with a developmental football program?

Agree with the LBs at this point I don't mind if we miss on Levenberry and stick with 2. We are close to a lot of 14 LBs, hell we could just recruit the Cass Tech LBs and Nyles Morgan from Crete-Monee.

  • ^ I really like Levenberry and I don't care that 247Sports dropped him precipitously. I liked his tape. (Admittedly, I do have a few concerns but none of which are major.)

But at the same time, I recognize that recruiting is (in raw terms) a numbers game that forces coaches to balance things in both the short-term and long-term.

Given the connections our coaches have made in the 2014 class, I just don't see Levenberry as a priority in the 2013 class. Still, it's clear to me that our coaches are quite fond of Levenberry and perceive in him something intangibly special. And in this case, I'm inclined to trust the coaches.

The draw of each school would vary person to person. Geography. Coaches. Depth chart. Academics. Offensive and defensive schemes. For example, I would never pick LSU (re: poor academics) and probably wouldn't consider Alabama either (re: poor academics and Saban). And while USC is interesting in the abstract because of its location, history and academics, I don't really think much of Kiffin as a head coach.

  • Malik McDowell now has an Oregon offer (from Trieu's twitter). That gives him two from the Pac12, IIRC. Certainly looks like he is going to blow up; hopefully the coaches can get him to make an early decision in our favor.

  • I personally think UM will be hard to beat out. But an early commit as you said would be massively in our favor.

2014 Cass Tech guys visiting this weekend:

LB Gary Hosey LB Deon Drake LB William White WR Damon Webb

Since the coaches are also interested in Nyles Morgan and Clifton Garrett, I just don't see the coaches taking all the LBs from Cass Tech.

Good problem to have I suppose.

(And it would be nice the Michigan coaches could turn Illinois into a recruiting base...especially since the Core 6 program has taken off.)

I would not be surprised at all if the only Cass Tech kid we end up with next year is the WR Webb. The LBers are all pretty small and good players, but we're only looking at 1 (probably 2 if Levenberry goes to FSU) for 2014 and we can save that for an elite player like Garrett or a yet-to-be-named prospect. Miggins is another that we might offer late, but I'm not sure.
